Kindest Kansas Citian
Contest Guidelines
Please read the following contest guidelines carefully. The guidelines listed below are designed to help students
meet the contest objectives of defining kindness and identify adult role models who demonstrate kind, caring, and
respectful behavior that the students would like to emulate in their lives. Please ensure each student receives a
copy of these guidelines.
1.
Kindergarten through 12th grade students may participate in the essay contest. Only
kindergarten through 2nd grade students may submit a drawing with a one sentence
description. Sixth through 12th grade students may submit a video in lieu of an essay.
Entries are judged in the following grade level groups: K-2 Drawing; K-2 Essay; 3-5
Essay; 6-8 Essay; 9-12 Essay; 6-8 Video; 9-12 Video.

Essays should not be longer than one page written in ink or typed. Drawings must be on
8.5 x 11 inch paper. See the enclosed Video Contest Guidelines for maximum length of
videos and file types accepted. All entries must be completed on or accompanied by an
Official Contest Form with the required information complete and correct to qualify in
the top 20 honorees (see the Official Contest Form for the list of required information).
3.
Individuals, couples, or groups may be nominated for the Kindest Kansas Citian
Contest. The nominee must be a Kansas City Metro area resident, 18 years of age or
older, and NOT related to the nominating student. Famous individuals will NOT qualify
in the top 20 honorees unless they have personal relationships with the nominating
students.
4.
Entries should demonstrate the positive impact the nominee has made on the student’s
life. Judges are looking to identify kind acts that come from the heart. Emotional content
takes precedence over spelling and grammar. Entries must be created by the youth and
not parents or teachers. For very young children and youth with disabilities, adults may
take dictation for essays or write a descriptive sentence for drawings.
5.
Entries must be postmarked or delivered to Synergy Services’ office by 5 pm on Friday,
February 3rd, 2017. Mailed entries should be addressed to Synergy Services – KKC; 400

Participation Prizes
Now there are even more ways to win in the Kindest Kansas Citian Contest!
One winner will be drawn for each of the three (3) groups below. Each winner will receive a minimum of a $250
gift card to a major retail store. Follow the Kindest Kansas Citian FaceBook page to watch the prize pots grow!
Student Winner: Each student essay, drawing, and video will be evaluated by a group of community volunteers.
These volunteers are charged with the task of selecting the top 100 entries out of the thousands submitted. The
criteria used by the community group are listed on the Contest Guidelines page. Each of the top 100 students’
names will be entered into a drawing for the Student Participation Prize! Only one (1) student will win the prize of
$250+ to a major retail store. This student will NOT NECESSARILY be selected as one of the top 20 winners who
attend the Kindest Kansas Citian Awards Celebration, although the student is certainly welcome to purchase a ticket
and attend the event.
Faculty Winner: The names of school faculty (including School Coordinators) who played a part in the submission
of AT LEAST 15 student entries into the Kindest Kansas Citian Contest should be listed once below (add sheet if
necessary) and submitted along with the Cover Sheet and entries by Friday, February 3rd, 2017. Each of the faculty
listed below is eligible for the Faculty Participation Prize of $250+ to a major retail store. One (1) name will be
selected as the winner. This winner will NOT be recognized at or awarded a free ticket to the Kindest Kansas Citian
Awards Celebration, although he or she is welcome to purchase a ticket and attend the event.
Kindest School Winner: See the Kindest School Guidelines for all entry rules. Everyone is welcome to nominate a
school for the Kindest School Award. The Kindest Kansas Citian Committee will select the winning school based
on the essay’s description of how the school achieves a kind school culture. The winning submission will
demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of what it means to be the Kindest School. The Kindest School is
recognized and awarded complimentary tickets to the Kindest Kansas Citian Awards Celebration. The Kindest
School will also receive the $250+ gift card to a major retail store (not the individual who nominates the winning
school).
