Mass Production Mass Production: This method is used:•When there is a mass market for a large number of identical products, for example, chocolate bars, ready meals and canned food. •The product passes from one stage of production to another along a production line. •Mass production reduces time and costs but if there is a problem the whole production stops. •The number of workers is considerably reduced in this method of production as much of it can automated. •Changing the line to make a different product can take a long time. •The initial purchasing of pieces of equipment used to mass produce items can be very expensive but this will outweigh the number of products that can be produced over a period of time. •CAM is a very important element of mass production. Continuous-flow Production This method is used: • When the production process is set to make one specific product 24hours a day, seven days a week, possibly over a long period e.g. Breakfast cereals, baked beans • Where it would take a long time to stop and re-start the production process every day • when a consistent high quality product is being produced • So that large orders can be met on time
