Monarchs Visit North Charleston Coliseum For First Time Friday
The South Carolina Stingrays begin a stretch of three games in three days
at the North Charleston Coliseum Friday night when the Manchester
Monarchs come to town for the first time. The teams met earlier in
the month in Manchester, with the Monarchs taking two of the three
matchups at the SNHU Arena. Manchester picked up one point in
Greenville Friday night, losing a third period lead and falling to the Swamp
Rabbits 4-3 in overtime. South Carolina is coming off two straight wins
at home over Orlando and Atlanta since returning from an 11-day trip
up north. The Stingrays are in fourth place in the ECHL’s South Division
standings with 57 total points and have the opportunity to move back
up this weekend. Manchester leads the North Division with 67 points, six
points ahead of second place Reading. Friday’s meeting is the fourth of
five this season between the two teams.
Rays Overcome Early Deficit To Defeat Glads 4-2
The South Carolina Stingrays were down 2-0 after the first period but
stormed back with four straight goals to overtake the Atlanta Gladiators
by a score of 4-2 on Tuesday night at the North Charleston Coliseum. The
first ECHL goal of Alex Brooks’ career turned out to be the game-winner
in the third period for South Carolina, while Domenic Monardo scored
for the fourth consecutive game and extended his point streak to seven
contests. Goaltender Joe Cannata, who was reassigned to the Stingrays
earlier in the day, made his first start for South Carolina and stopped 25
shots. Andrew Cherniwchan added insurance at 18:22 of the third with his
sixth goal of the season from Monardo and Rob Flick. Cherniwchan is on a
five-game point streak with nine points in his last seven contests.

Scouting The Monarchs
Manchester has a record of 29-12-5-4 through 50 games and are
in first place in the ECHL’s North Division with 67 points. Forward
Matt Leitner leads the team with 41 points (nine goals, 32 assists),
while Daniel Doremus is just behind with 40 points (eight goals,
32 assists). Doremus has had multi-point games in three of his
last four outings. Joe Diamond has scored the most goals of any
Monarch forward with 17. David Kolomatis and Teddy Doherty
lead the blueliners with 25 points apiece through 41 games.
Goaltender Sam Brittain has led the way in net, playing in 31
games with a record of 19-6-3. His goals against average is
3.02 to go along with a save percentage at 0.903.
Stingrays Writing New History vs. Manchester
The Stingrays and Monarchs met three times earlier in the month in
Manchester for their first ever matchups. The Monarchs took two of
the three contests up north and now South Carolina is looking for
payback in the two meetings this weekend. Friday’s game will be
the first time Manchester has played a game at the North Charleston
Coliseum.
Monardo Making A Difference
Forward Domenic Monardo has been the hottest Stingrays’ forward
recently and is currently riding a seven-game point streak with 12
points on five goals and seven assists during the span. Monardo
has goals in his last four games and has also recorded at least
three shots on game in each of his last nine outings. The Oakville,
Ont. native now has 24 points (eight goals, 16 assists) in 34 games
with South Carolina this year and has moved up to third in scoring
among active Stingrays players.
Cherniwchan Continuing Impressive Run
Forward Andrew Cherniwchan has been a big part of the Stingrays
offense lately and has scored points in five straight games as well as
nine total points in his last seven contests. The Hinton, Alta. native
notched his first game-winning goal of the season in the third
period during a 4-on-4 situation Sunday afternoon, giving the Rays
a 3-2 lead. He then extended the point streak with a third period
insurance goal against Atlanta Tuesday night. Cherniwchan now has
11 points (six goals, five assists) in 15 games this season.
Brooks Strikes For First ECHL Goal
Defenseman Alex Brooks notched his first ECHL goal in the third
period of Tuesday’s contest vs. Atlanta, giving the Stingrays the
victory in come-from-behind style. The native of Grand Rapids, Mich.
got the tally in his 27th career game for the Rays, after previously
assisting on nine goals. Brooks is in his rookie professional season
after playing in college at Division III University of Wisconsin-Stevens
Point from 2012-16. He began the season with the Fayetteville
FireAntz in the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL),
registering six points (one goal, five assists) in 12 games.

Zajac Recalled To Hershey, Weinstein Returns To Rays
The Stingrays announced multiple transactions Thursday ahead of
their weekend games. In a swap with the Hershey Bears, forward
Kelly Zajac has been recalled while defenseman Steve Weinstein has
been released from his professional tryout contract and returned to
South Carolina. Zajac is the Stingrays’ leading scorer this season with
46 points (10g, 36a) through 48 games. The Winnipeg, Man. native
is in his second year with South Carolina after joining the team
midway through the 2015-16 season. The forward put up 22 points
(9g, 13a) in 21 regular season games last season before becoming
a force in the playoffs with 18 points (3g, 15a). Weinstein returns to
South Carolina after playing in five games with Hershey and picking
up two assists to go along with a +3 rating. A native of Los Angeles,
Weinstein has suited up for 32 games on the blue line with South
Carolina this season and is the scoring leader among defenseman
with 19 points (3g, 16a).
Stingrays Acquire Rookie Forward Megannety
South Carolina traded for the ECHL rights to Patrick Megannety from
the Allen Americans Thursday in exchange for future considerations.
Megannety had been a member of the Pensacola Ice Flyers in the
SPHL, playing in 26 games this season. The forward has totaled 15
points on eight goals and seven assists during his rookie year. A
rookie out of Oakville, Ont., Megannety started his year with Allen,
playing in one game. He spent four seasons at Clarkson University
from 2012-16, playing in 142 games and totaling 57 points (22 goals,
35 assists). At the conclusion of the 2015-16 season, Megannety
signed with the Brampton Beast and scored one goal in eight
games. The 24-year-old will wear No. 23 with South Carolina.
Double Deuce Nearing Season-High Scoring Marks
Patrick Gaul, the longest tenured Stingrays player has 27 points
(eight goals, 19 assists) this season through 47 games. The fan
favorite is just four goals shy of his career-high of 12 and has now
matched his high mark in assists. All of his previous highs came
during the 2013-14 season when Gaul finished with 31 points. He is
now second in scoring this season among active Stingrays players.
Penalty Killing Prowess
Recently the Stingrays penalty kill has been among the best in the
ECHL and the team now has a killing rate at 85.2% which is secondbest in the league. South Carolina has not allowed a power play goal
in seven of their last eight games.
Stingrays Cool Off Solar Bears 3-2
The South Carolina Stingrays moved into a third place tie in the
ECHL’s South Division standings with a 3-2 win over the Orlando
Solar Bears Sunday afternoon at the North Charleston Coliseum.
Domenic Monardo ran his point streak to six games with a first
period goal and Andrew Cherniwchan had a goal and an assist in the
contest which included the game winner. Goaltender Adam Carlson
earned his eighth victory of the season with a 25-save performance.
The Stingrays got the last word when Cherniwchan scored the
winner from Colton Saucerman and Marcus Perrier. Orlando had a
few chances late in the contest to get back in the game, including a
power play after SC took a penalty for too many men on the ice. But
the Solar Bears came up empty as Carlson closed the door.
