The Elite Commonwealth Games 2018 Squad

The Welsh Amateur Boxing Association would like to announce the selection of the Elite
Commonwealth Games 2018 (CWG2018) squad. The CWG 2018 squad is an isolated performance
programme with the task of delivering medals at the Commonwealth Games 2018 in the Gold Coast,
Australia.
The selection for the CWG2018 squad was determined by the following extract from the WABA
Selection Policy 2016.
Elite CWG 2018 Performance programme Male and Female Selection
7.1 As set out in the WABA’s performance strategy the Elite CWG 2018 programme is tasked
with winning CWG medals at the Gold Coast 2018. The Elite CWG 2018 selection policy acts as
the frame work to providing the selection committee with the below evidence allowing accurate
selection decisions to be made based on a boxers potential to win medals at the CWG 2018.



WABA Boxer Assessment performance
7.2 The SC will endeavour to select boxers who demonstrate CWG 2018 medal winning
potential onto the Elite CWG 2018 performance programme. Consideration for selection will be
based on the evidence identified in 7.1.
7.3 The SC may use their discretion to consider the WABA Championship results as further
evidence to support the selection process.
7.4 Expert advisors (e.g. National Coaches, Strength & Conditioning Coach, Sports Psychologist,
Doctor and Physiotherapist) may be invited, at the permanent members’ discretion, to advise
the SC and support the selection process.
7.5 A boxer may be selected onto the Elite CWG 2018 performance programme if he or she is
identified as a medal potential boxer for CWG Durban 2022. The SC will review the evidence in
support of the boxer selection and use its complete discretion in making a decision.”
The CWG 2018 programme boxer has very specific performance development criteria of which he/
she will be constantly assessed over the two year run up to the Commonwealth Games. The
performance team will continue to assess, review and monitor the performances of all eligible Welsh
boxers in or outside the CWG 2018 programme with the view to select Wales’ strongest boxing team
for the Gold Coast.
