Personalized Learning Designer: Getting More from Moodle and Meeting Needs of All Students 1. The Personalized Learning Designer is a powerful tool that can automate many processes of classroom management, such as sending e-mails for low quiz scores, directing students to additional review materials, directing students to the syllabus, etc. 2. Three components work together in this process: events, conditions, and actions. 3. Events below: trigger actions 4. Conditions are listed below: 5. Possible actions appear below: under certain conditions . Events are listed For example, an event is what occurred or what the student did, the conditions are the circumstances surrounding what the student did or what occurred, and the action is what will happen when the event occurs. Click on add and save when specifying events, conditions, and actions and then click on save again to save the entire rule. 6. Often the first item we wish students to read in order to be prepared for class from day one is the syllabus. How can we get students to read it? Well, what if we immediately direct them to it it as soon as they enter the course. It is possible, your wish granted. Here’s how: a. Click on Personalized Learning Designer in the Settings block. b. Click on Add a Rule. c. Give the rule a name and select an Event Type—e.g., Course entered. d. Click on Condition and click Add—e.g. Select User Role Check, select Student, and click on Save. e. Click on condition again, select Activity Viewed, click on Add, select User has not viewed the following activity, select an activity, locate syllabus as Activity Type, and click on Save. f. Click on action, go to Activity, click on Add and locate your course syllabus under activity type and activity, and click on Save. 7. Click on Save to savefor the overall rule. 8. Another example might be sending an e-mail or helpful links to a student(s) failing a quiz. To accomplish this: a. After clicking on Add a Rule, click on Event and select Activity Completed, then select the Activity—e.g., Quiz then the specific activity, Quiz 1 and click on Add. b. Click on Conditions then Activity Grade Range and Add. On the pop-up screen that appears select the activity using the radio button, e.g., Quiz and the specific quiz and fill in the box for grade is less than and enter the percentage, e.g., 70. Be sure to click on Save. c. Click on Actions then choose Send E-mail then click on Add and enter text, specify learner or students as recipients and use tokens such as first name to customize. Click on Save to save the action. d. Lastly, click on Save to save the entire rule. 9.
