Overview of Open Access Open Access (OA) publishing is about sharing research freely and openly to all readers online and has significant social, economic and scientific benefits. It forms part of the Government’s commitment to transparency and meets funder requirements that publications be OA compliant. Aston’s policy states that all journal and conference publications meet the same level of OA compliance. REF 2020 will not accept any outputs that do not meet HEFCE’s discoverability and accessibility requirements. OA publishing will benefit you, and Aston University, as your citation rates will be enhanced and it can increase research impact. Routes to Open Access There are two routes to open access – Green and Gold Green - publishing the traditional way but also uploading a version of your article in Aston Research Explorer via PURE. LOG IN: Log into PURE using this URL: IIMPORTANT - save this URL to your internet favourites! Alternatively, you may have a PURE Icon on your desktop! https://pure.aston.ac.uk ADD NEW PUBLICATION: To add a new publication to PURE click on the following buttons: Press either button to create new record Hover mouse here to show ‘+’ SELECT YOUR OUTPUT TYPE: You can either select to add journal article metadata manually or you can use online sources to help you populate the metadata (the easier option): Selection process for manually adding a journal article (steps 1, 2 & 3). Then next section on ‘Completing Metadata Information’ 2 3 1 Use online sources to populate metadata for you! If you have the DOI for your publication you can use the DOI repository CrossRef to import metadata. Important: You will still need to upload the accepted / postprint version of your article! PURE Guidance - Page 3 of 3 Produced by Paul Jones, Research Information Manager 0121 204 4443 / [email protected] COMPLETING METADATA INFORMATION: If you are completing journal article metadata manually you will need to complete mandatory fields for your entry… Mandatory fields: Those parts of the form marked with * must be completed Important: When you have completed all of the mandatory fields, and any extra information, you must select ‘For Validation’ as the status. Important: You must remember to click There are 8 mandatory Fields when creating a new record: Type > Peer reviewed: Select whether the article is ‘Peer-reviewed’ or ‘Not peer-reviewed’ Publication State > State: Select ‘In preparation’, ‘In press’, ‘Published’ or ‘Unpublished’ Publication Information > Original Language: 14 language choices or select ‘other’, ‘multiple languages’ or ‘unknown’ Publication Information > Title of the contribution in original language: Enter title exactly as it appears on the publication Authors and Affiliations > Authors: Use this button to find your name or the name of other authors. You can create an external author by clicking on the button in the pop up box Research output managed by > Managing organisational unit: This should be automatically populated when you select the Author – you can use the button to change the name Journal > Journal: use this button either to find a journal or create a new journal (if it’s not on Pure) – the needs to be entered accurately and ideally the ISSN number Publications Dates > Journal publication date – Enter date (Year – Month – Day) This additional field is particularly useful: Relations > Projects: Select the correct project number in Pure to link the data Once the metadata is complete you must remember to add the ‘Accepted’ or ‘Post-print version’ of the article in the document section of the form by clicking here Remember you must You must do this regardless of any accessibility embargo your work or lose it!
