The Institute for Government is an independent charity dedicated to helping make government
in the UK more effective. Working directly with leading politicians from all parties in
Westminster and with senior civil servants in Whitehall over the five years since it was
established, the Institute has provided evidence-based advice to help them do their jobs
better.

About the role
Job Title:
Web and Publications Editor
Reports to:
Head of Publishing
Working within a seven-strong communications and events team, the Web and Publications
Editor plays a key role in our web publishing, report production, and email marketing
operations.
Reporting to – and deputising for – the Head of Publishing, the Web and Publications Editor
works closely with research and communications staff to:



edit blogs and other publications
maintain and update the Institute’s website
produce targeted e-marketing communications.
Major tasks:







Editing the website on a daily basis, publishing reports and blogs in concert with
research staff
Querying, sub-editing and proofreading Institute reports and blogs, producing reports in
a Microsoft Word template
Working with research colleagues to help them develop published outputs whose
structure, presentation, language and dissemination maximise engagement and
impact, and planning production schedules to ensure timely delivery
Working with external design agencies and the Head of Publishing to ensure timely
delivery of high-quality publications and digital communications
Using our customer relationship management system (CRM) to identify and extract
relevant audience lists for Institute reports and blogs; writing, producing and sending
dedicated e-marketing communications and monitoring performance
Working with the Media Manager to develop the Institute’s social media presence and
operations
Other tasks as identified by the Head of Publishing or the Director of Communications.
Person Specification
Essential:







Experience of sub-editing blogs and web pages together with longer, more complex
texts to improve structure, clarity and flow, and proof-reading copy in compliance with
brand guidelines
Experience of maintaining websites (ideally using Drupal and WordPress), and using
social media in a work environment
Project management skills, including planning, scheduling and monitoring
The ability to write for the web, applicable to explanatory or marketing copy, and a
detailed knowledge of Microsoft Word
Familiarity with image manipulation software, particularly Photoshop
Highly organised with good time management, able to work on own initiative
Excellent interpersonal, team working and account management skills.

Desirable:





A demonstrable interest in the operation of government, and government policy
Experience of running email campaigns, including copywriting, the use of bulk email
management systems, and the analysis of performance metrics
Expertise in email management software, ideally Campaign Monitor
Expertise in managing and using data, and experience of using a customer relationship
management system in order to segment and target relevant audiences
Basic HTML skills.

Timetable
The expected selection process timetable is:

Start dates:
To be agreed after offer of appointment.
Terms:
Successful candidates will join on a permanent contract and will be
subject to a three-month probationary period.
Salary:
Salary £25,000 - £30,000 per annum, depending on experience.
Benefits:
The Institute has a pension scheme which you will be eligible to join
once your probation period is complete. The contribution is a minimum
of 5% from the employee and a fixed 10% contribution from the
employer.
Death in service life assurance of 4 x salary is given to all staff.
Working hours:
You will normally work a 5-day week of 37.5 hours (9am – 5.30pm with
a one hour lunch break) but you will, as the occasion requires, work
outside these hours. The Institute is willing to consider part-time
working, but this must fit with the needs of the Institute.
Annual leave:
For a full-time post your annual leave allowance will be 30 days in
addition to 8 days of bank and public holiday. Annual leave will be prorated for non-full-time posts. The Institute’s leave year runs from
September to August.
