Zane State College Student Guide to eTutoring Accessing eTutoring You will use My Z-Online as your entry point for eTutoring. Sign in to My Z-Online (https://my.zanestate.edu/ics/) using your Zane State username and password. Then click the Student Resources tab. Click the Academic Help button. On the next screen, click the E-Tutoring Services button. Then, click the eTutoring.org logo. Zane State College Student Guide to eTutoring 7/17/2013 1 You will now be taken through an authentication process (which will only happen the first time you access eTutoring). In the table that appears, click to select your account. Then click the Select Account button. On the next screen, enter your Zane State username. You must also create a password. You will only use this password for the first-time authentication process. You will not have to use or remember this password for future visits to eTutoring. For the password, you must use this formula: Your initial password will be the Capital first letter of your first name, the first three letters of your last name, with the first letter capitalized, and the last three numbers of your Student ID. (For Example: If you were Monado Zane, with student ID# 12345, your password would be: MZan345). When you have entered your username and password, click Confirm SSO Account. If you do not enter this information correctly, you will get an error message. Simply click the Back button on your browser and refer to the instructions above. Zane State College Student Guide to eTutoring 7/17/2013 2 On the next screen, you must enter your profile information. Be sure to click the box next to “I Agree” at the bottom of the page. Then click the Update Profile button. Use this section only if you want to receive text messages when a question or paper you posted has been responded to. You will now be on your eTutoring home page. For return visits, follow the instructions on page 1 above. You can interact with a tutor in a specific academic subject area using an instant messaging chat box, a digital whiteboard, and (optionally) a microphone and/or webcam. You must disable your computer’s popup blocker for eChat to work. eChat tutors are scheduled for certain times on certain days. Be sure to view the schedule, and make sure you are logged in during the time slot for the subject area you want assistance with. You can see on your home page which tutors are currently online and which subjects they are tutoring. Click the tutor’s name to enter that tutor’s “room.” eChat covers these subjects: Accounting Anatomy & Physiology Biology Calculus Chemistry Digital Literacy Math Microsoft Office Statistics Writing When you enter the chat room, the tutor may already be in a conversation with other students. Please be courteous and patient until it is your turn. Tutor’s Name Students’ Names (Including yours) Click to activate whiteboard drawing tool Chat Box Type here and press Enter to add to discussion Zane State College Student Guide to eTutoring 7/17/2013 Whiteboard 5 eQuestions The eQuestions service allows you to submit a question about anything related to one of the subjects covered by the eTutoring service. The question can be short or long, specific or general. However, you should provide enough information so that the tutor knows how to answer your question as effectively as possible. A tutor will respond within 48 hours (usually sooner). To submit a question, Click on the “eQuestions” link and click the Post a New Question button. First, indicate the subject of your question so that it will be sent to a tutor with the proper expertise. eQuestions covers these subjects: Accounting Anatomy & Physiology Biology Calculus Chemistry Math Writing Depending on the subject, you may have to provide extra information so the tutor can better answer your question. Click Submit Your eQuestion when you are finished. When a tutor responds to your eQuestion, you will see a notification when you first log in. Click the eQuestions link. In the list on the next screen, click the topic to see the response to your question. Remember that tutors will not answer your homework questions for you! Always show your work and explain where you are getting stuck. Zane State College Student Guide to eTutoring 7/17/2013 6 eWriting Lab The eWriting Lab is where you can submit papers for review. You are allowed to submit a paper up to three (3) times. Papers can be for any class. A tutor will respond within 24 to 48 hours. Tutors will not simply proofread your paper to correct every error. Rather, tutors identify patterns of errors or weaknesses and explain how to make improvements to your writing. When you click the “eWriting Lab” link, you will see the following: Click Submit a New Writing Assignment for a paper that you have not previously submitted to eTutoring. If you have revised a paper for which you already received feedback from eTutoring, click Submit a 2nd or 3rd Draft. Click View Writing Assignments Archive if you want to look at your previously submitted papers and feedback. When you submit a new writing assignment, you will need to provide information about the assignment. This allows the tutor to give you the most helpful feedback. When you have entered the information, you must upload your paper. Click the Choose File button to locate the paper in your computer. Get a text message when your eQuestion or eWriting Lab submission has been responded to! Click on “Profile” under your name, and enter your cell number, carrier, and notification preferences. Click Update Profile to save your changes. After you submit a paper, the most recent submission will be visible from your home page. You will receive an automated email when your paper has been responded to by a tutor. To view the response, click the eWriting Lab link. Zane State College Student Guide to eTutoring 7/17/2013 7 In the next screen, click View Writing Assignments Archive. In the list, click the title of the paper you want to view. Look for the New Response icon ( ). You will then be able to see all of the files that you and the tutor have submitted for that paper. Click on the tutor’s file to see the response. When you are ready to submit a revision, you can do so using the box further down the page. Add comments about your current draft, and click the Choose File button to upload it. When you are finished, click Submit Your Writing Assignment. Zane State College Student Guide to eTutoring 7/17/2013 8 Using the Resources Section From the home page, click the Resources link. On the following screen, click on an academic subject under “Choose Subject,” then click on a topic under “Main Topics,” and finally click on one of the individual resources under “Click to Access Resources.” The individual resource will then be displayed, which may include information, web links, and/or attached documents.
