Remember these 10 networking conversation starters (1/2).
“Hi, I’m Jessica.”
• So simple, yet, so difficult! Always remember to start with one hand
outstretched (key).
“I really like your necklace.”
• Women love compliments and (surprise!) men do to. Find anything a bit
special and say you love it.
“Is it quieter on this side of the room? I can hardly hear over there.”
• Brilliant. Works in any busy, loud event.
“May as well chat if we’re in line for the bathroom!”
• The bathroom line is the easiest place to strike up a chat because you have a
captive audience.
“Do you work for [company name]?”
• This opener can be a bit awkward, but you’re at the same party, so it’s a
reasonable question to ask.

• Commenting about food is always a win.
“So, was it a pain for you to get here?”
• A classic New York question, great for any big city.
“Hey, aren’t you friends with [fill in random name]?”
• See someone who looks vaguely familiar? He or she will tell you “no,” and
conversation will begin.
“It is so hot (or cold) in here.”
• Hey, maybe it is, maybe it isn’t, but the person will either agree or disagree,
and pretty soon you’re talking
“Man, I hate networking.”

• Best if you have an idea what the person you’re talking to will be interested
in.
“Wow, I just can't believe all the crazy news headlines today. What a week!”
• Works if you’ve been reading the news regularly and have something
interesting to say.
"Any chance you read the news today? I missed it, and I'm dying to know
what's happening with [insert news topic here].”
• Think of some groundbreaking story that happened in the last week.
“Did you catch the game last night?”
