Judo –Present & past




Judo became the official sport of the Olympic games
back in 1964 when Tokyo hosted the Olympic
games.
Since then Judo has attracted wide attention as a
world-class sport.
Originally Judo was a form of self-defense which
enabled an unarmed person to defend himself even
against an armed adversary.
The word Judo is composed of two Chinese
characters - Ju and Do. Ju means soft or gentle, and
Do means "the way", or disciplinary method, hence
we have the connotation that in Judo, the combatant
meets the opponent without resorting to strength
or violence, and he seeks to overcome him by taking
advantage of the other's strength and movements

History & Game



A trained student of Judo knows how to get
an opponent, who may be bigger than he is,
off-balance and throw him away to the
ground. This is the reason why people
sometimes say, "Gentleness controls
hardness.“
From the old days, various schools of Judo
have existed, each trying to develop its own
methods. They were unified in the latter part
of the 19th century, and in 1885, Jigoro Kano
(1860-1983), the father of modern Judo,
founded the Kodokan Hall, leading to the
development of Kodokan Judo as a sport
known today.
He also invented a unique system identifying
Kyu (class) and Dan (rank) of Judo players.
