STRATEGIES to SUPPORT COMPREHENSION at HOME P-P-P-P Strategy Preview – Pause – Prompt – Praise (A paired reading technique developed by Keith Topping) Helps develop fluency & reading achievement! 1st PREVIEW Have a brief discussion about the reading. Just starting (Look at the cover. Read the back blurb. ) “What do you think the book will be about? Why do you think that? In the middle (Look over reading log, scan chapter title, captions etc.) “ What has happened to date? What do you think will happen next? How did you learn that? After the preview discussion, move on to reading together until the student wishes to read alone. 2nd P – PAUSE If your child misreads or is stumped by a word.. PAUSE Count to 3 silently or wait until the end of the sentence / paragraph. This may give the reader an opportunity to self-correct. If your child does not self-correct …. Work together to decode the word HOW to HELP YOUR CHILD to DECODE Are there word parts that you know? What letter sounds do you know? Now what do you think the word is? Reread the entire sentence. 3rd P = PROMPT If your child still cannot figure out the word…. PROMPT Prompt him / her with… *Let’s read that again. * What makes sense? * Is there a picture? * Does that word make sense? You read this sentence as… Does it make sense? What else could this word be? If the reader is still not successful… Provide the proper pronunciation and resume reading with the child. Reread the entire sentence! 4th P – PRAISE Praise the child if he/she self-corrects and pronounces the word correctly. Resume reading with the child until he/she indicates they want to solo read. After reading… Praise the use of proper reading strategies and ask your child to tell you their favorite part of the story or use other open-ended questions provided.
