Minors/Majors Introduction As Managers and Coaches the way you choose to communicate your team expectations and requirements to your team will not only improve the effectiveness of your team, it will also provide parents with a view into the league’s sportsmanship and volunteer participation ideals. Communicating your Team and Parent requirements and expectations before the season begins is crucial to having a smooth-running season. Below are some key points to be sure to cover during your parent meeting. Have a great 2010 season! Uniforms Uniform: WWLL provides team jerseys and hats. The jersey is on loan to you for the duration of the season and must be returned in good condition at the end of the season. You will need to purchase baseball pants with belt loops, socks, and a belt to complete the uniform. Manager will confirm what color to purchase. Gear: Each child will also need baseball cleats (not soccer or football) and a baseball glove. Manager should address glove size. WWLL requires each child to wear an athletic supporter with a cup; a mouth guard is optional. All of these items are available at Redmond Athletic Supply, Risan, Big 5, Play It Again, and Sports Authority. Equipment WWLL provides 2 – 3 bats for each team, catchers gear and baseballs. You may also use your own personal bat. All bats used in Little League must have a BPF rating of 1.15 or less. This information can be found on the bat barrel. Manager should address weight, length range, difference between composite vs. aluminum, as appropriate. Season Overview Minors will have up to 3 practices a week until games begin. Players are nominated by their teammates to try out for these teams. Tryouts are held on June 15 or later and announcements follow. Team parents will handle ordering of tickets for each team. Take advantage of reduced price tickets. WWLL will have a seating section together. Volunteer Opportunities WWLL is run by volunteers and we need all parents to volunteer in some capacity. Areas needed: team parent, safety officer, umpire s, field set-up, Mid-Season Classic. Volunteers are especially needed to make the Mid-Season Classic a success and more information will be directed thru the “team parent”. (clarify that ALL parents are needed, but the “Team Parent” will help funnel the information.) Parent Expectations WWLL Managers/Coaches dedicate hours of their time to each team. Parents can assist their coach in many ways: Practices: Deliver your player to practices and games prior to the assigned time, ready to play. Assist at practice when needed. Absence: Communicate anticipated or unanticipated absences immediately to your Manager so team strategy/line-ups can be adjusted. Remember, your child’s absence from a practice or games affects the entire team. Dugout: Keep all food out of the dugout, assist in the dugout if needed. Sportsmanship: As a fan, your job is to support your child and his/her team, regardless of the score. For some kids, the little league experience will be their only baseball experience and we want it to be positive. Be an example of good sportsmanship for your player . Please provide your coaching tips after the game so all kids can focus on the message that their coaches are sending during the game. Stressful game situations can sometimes bring out our ultra-competitive side, so please remember that there are two groups of kids on the field who can hear what you say. It is your responsibility as parent to review this with your guests attending the game.
