HABS Fielding Drills: Figure 8 drill:- (min 6 fielders) 5 30-40m 1 6/2 30-40m 3 7 4 8 Key: Fielders Cones Coach Ball Thrown Ball Ball Feed Running Line Stumps Guide: 1. Coach (with Mitt & Bat) hits ball centrally (in air or on ground) out to the back while fielder 1 attacks to field. 2. Fielder 1 fields the ball (short barrier/high catch) and throws back to the coach (one bounce). Fielder follows run through diagonally to cone. 3. Field the ball (underarm flick) rolled from cone. 4. Fielder continues run to replace the feeder on cone. 5. Feeder runs to top of drill to join fielding queue. 6. Coach (with Mitt & Bat) hits ball centrally (in air or on ground) out to the back while fielder 5 attacks to field. 7. Fielder 5 fields the ball (short barrier/high catch) and throws back to the coach (one bounce). Fielder follows run through diagonally to cone. 8. Field the ball (low catch) fed from cone. 9. Fielder continues run to replace the feeder on cone. 10. Feeder runs to top of drill to join fielding queue. Repeat the figure of 8 pattern changing the types of feeds (ground/catches) Equipment List: Cones x4 Stump x1 Bat x1 Balls x4 Mitt x1 HABS Fielding Drills: Overarm/Underarm Drill:- (min 6 fielders) 4 20m 3 1 2 Guide: 1. Coach (with Mitt) rolls ball towards fielder at position 2 ( 2. Fielder attacks the ball and fields using underarm intercept and flicks the ball at the stump (position 1) follows run through to position 3. 3. Fielder backs up the underarm throw (using short barrier) and overarm throws the ball at the base of stump. 4. Fielder backs up the overarm throw (using long barrier) and overarm throws the ball to the coach on the full. Repeat the process. Equipment List: Cones x3 Flexi-Stumps x2 Balls x4 Mitt x1 HABS Fielding Drills: Square Drill:- (min 8 fielders) 30m 30m Guide: The ball is hit out by the Coach (with Mitt & Bat) to the gap between two cones. A fielder from each cone attack the ball The first fielder to the ball fields and offloads to the other fielder who throws (overarm) back to the Coach. After fielding the fielders continue their runs through to the opposite cone. Rotate the feeds at random or in order round the sides of the square. Occasionally the Coach can hit a high catch (fielders must call the catch) Occasionally the Coach shouts “STUMP” to signal that the fielder must throw (overarm) at the stump in the centre of the square. Fielders on the other side must anticipate and back-up the throw. ( ) When “STUMP” is called players return to their original cones after the skills have been executed. Equipment List: Cones x4 Flexi-Stumps x2 Bat x1 Balls x3 Mitt x1 HABS Fielding Drills: 6 cone Infield Drill:- (min 2 fielders) 10m 6 5 15m 4 3 2 1 Guide: Ball is rolled out by Coach, in line with the cone the fielder has just run around. Fielder starts at cone 1 and runs out to field a ball (focus on efficient fielding methods) then runs around cone 2 to field the next ball fed by the Coach. Repeat the process through all 6 cones returning the ball to the coach after each skill. The Coach can interchange ground fielding with catches for the fielder.
