Pa r k s & R e c
Dear Residents,
When I started my journey in Riverside over 14 years ago, the Parks & Recreation Department looked very different. The entire
department occupied in what is now our conference room, and all activities were held offsite at schools and churches. Summer camp
was held at the Scout Cabin with 35 to 40 children. The program brochures were approximately 22 pages, and sports leagues were the
primary programs.
Fast forward to 2017, and the department is more successful than ever. The Historic Water Tower was renovated in 2006 providing
programming space for many programs at lower prices. Our program brochure now averages 42 pages, providing early childhood
enrichment classes, specialty camps and programs, along with many additional special events. Our summer camps now span the ages
of 3 years to 14, with over 200 children at four locations. We also have a new program called R.O.A.R. (Riverside Opportunities for
Adaptive Recreation) with programs and trips specifically for residents with special needs. We have also added a 15 passenger van that
will allow us to provide transportation for our programs along with added trips. Our playgrounds and ball fields look better than ever
and we are always looking for improvements. Partnerships with Little League, local churches, and community organizations have
enhanced our offerings and raised the level of service to the community. In fact our newest partnership with School District 96 is
providing specialized programming for students within their schools. STEM, art, and athletic programs that children and parents have
requested are now being coordinated by the department in cooperation with the district.
In fact, the only thing that hasn’t changed over the years is the spirit of volunteerism within Riverside. We are always impressed
and extremely grateful at the amount of residents who generously donate their time. If you have ever coached a team, acted as a race
marshall, maintained the ice rink, or assisted at any one of our events…we thank you, and quite frankly couldn’t do it without you.
Sincerely,
Ron Malchiodi
Director of Parks & Recreation

special recreation association, such as Gateway SRA. When a
Riverside resident is able to participate in a program offered by one of
these agencies, it is usually at a higher cost to them. The Riverside

difference between the member versus non-member fee will be
reimbursed to the participant providing the proper procedure is
followed. For further info regarding this policy, please call Ron

OF PLAYGROUNDS & PARKS
It is important that all adults take time to learn about playground safety for the sake of the children - to be properly motivated to protect all
children from unnecessary harm and risks in their play. Children should be free to imagine that they are flying on the swing, sliding down
a mountain, riding wild animals, balancing like an Olympic gymnast, or climbing to the sky. You can guarantee their freedom to imagine,
dream, play, learn, and grow by protecting them, teaching them and supervising them.
You can…
•
•
Select the playground equipment they use wisely, instruct
children how to use it safely to protect themselves and
their playmates.
Supervise their play to correct behavior and prevent accidents
before they occur. You can help make the playground a safer
place by helping children with the following:
Climbing Gyms
Tell children to…
• Use the correct grip. Use fingers and thumbs (lock
grip) for climbing and holding.
• Use BOTH hands.
• Watch carefully when climbing down and avoid
those climbing up.
• Avoid having too many people using the
equipment.
Slides
Tell children to:
• Hold on with both hands as they go up the steps
on the slide, taking one step at a time.
• Never go up the sliding surface on the frame.
• Keep at least one arm's length between children.
• Slide down feet first, always sitting up, arms at
their sides.
• Be sure no one is in front of the slide before
sliding down.
• Be patient, do not push or shove, and to wait their
turn.
• Never use a metal slide that has been sitting out
in the sun.
Swings
Tot Swings
Reminder to adults...
• Always fasten restraining strap.
• Don't attempt to put too large a child in too small
a swing.
• Push gently to avoid violent head movements.
• Never leave a small child unattended in a swing.
• Remove crying or frightened child from swing.
Field Usage Permits
Tournaments, Leagues and other Organized
Recreational Activities
No person may utilize any park facility such as outdoor tennis, softball,
baseball or soccer facilities for tournaments, leagues or other activities
and outings unless a permit allowing such use or activity has first been
obtained.
PERMITS for this type of use may only be obtained from the
Parks & Recreation Office, Monday-Friday 9 am - 6 pm.
No person or organization shall bring or cause to be brought onto park
facilities any play class, day camp or similarly organized group or activity
of any kind without prior permission.
34
Tell children
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
to…
Sit in center of the swing.
Never stand or kneel on swing.
Hold on with both hands.
Stop the swing before getting off.
Walk around a moving swing - not too close to
the front or back.
Have only one person in a swing at a time.
Never swing empty swings or twist chains.
Tennis Court Safe Usage
Each person using the courts must have an annual tennis permit.
Permits are issued for the months April 1 - November 30 of each year.
