It has certainly been very difficult for me making the decision to move on from Waioneke at the end of this year, as your children are very special to me and your school staff and community are a pleasure to work alongside. I do look forward to all that Term 4 offers, and to enjoying everyone’s company during this time. Thank-you. We will keep you informed of the new principal for 2011 later in the term when an appoinment has been made. This week at school we are gearing up for Calf Club – with our preparation day on Friday and the actual event on Saturday I hope to see you all at Calf Club Linda ALL CALF CLUB TROPHIES MUST BE RETURNED TO SCHOOL BY THE END OF THIS WEEK. Calf Club Entries We know that our students have been busy caring for their lambs, calves and young goats ready for Calf Club day on 30 October. Do remember that Calf Club is considered a school day so all of our students must attend – and we encourage you to bring along extended family members and friends to enjoy the day with us Children do need to let their class teacher know they have arrived so they can be marked as attending on their class roll. If children are bringing calves, lambs or goats they need to arrive at 8:30 to register on the bottom field. The school hall will also be open at 8:30 to accept caged animals and on-the-day entries for baking. All children need to have checked in with their teacher before 9 a.m. when judging will start. We do need a parent or adult family member to stay with your child/ren on the day as it is too busy for teachers to supervise. In addition to our larger animals we also have the following entry categories: The hanging basket, photos and model farm entries need to be prepared beforehand and brought to school on Friday 29 October so they can be displayed in the hall: Hanging basket – the children can choose whatever they like to be the ‘basket’ and fill it with plants they have selected themselves. All the plants need to be growing (as opposed to a cut branch/flower popped in there for the day) Photos – our themes this year are: Plants, Life on the farm, Pets The photos need to be printed out on photo paper and standard size (6 x 4) Model farm – this year we would like the model farms to be made at home so they are more detailed. It is open to all age groups. We would encourage more of our senior students as well to participate in the model farm project. Students could work with a partner if they like to build their model. It could be one section of a working farm (e.g. the milking shed) or a full mini farm. The models can be no larger than 600cm x 600cm (so you could use a oven dish as a base) and will be graded on the following: 1. How realistic the scene is 2. The number of features which the children have constructed themselves (e.g. making a tree from natural materials as opposed to using a plastic tree) 3. Creativity The vege creations and floral arrangements need to be made at school on Friday 29th by the children Children need to bring their selected flowers, foliage, fruits and veges, plus any toothpicks they may need. If older students need to bring a vege knife it must be small and wrapped carefully. They do need to bring a breadboard for cutting as well and must let their teacher know they have a knife with them. EVERYONE must enter at least two categories. This years categories are: 1. Potato only: what can you create using ONLY a potato and toothpicks? 2. Vege creature – use whatever veges and fruits you like to make your creation 3. Vege vehicle - use whatever veges and fruits you like to make your creation (plus toothpicks of course ) 4. Vege flowers – can you make a ‘flower’ arrangement in a jar using veges? 5. Flower saucer – bring your own saucer along and make an artful arrangement 6. Flower arrangement in an interesting container 7. Button hole posy – make a teeny arrangement that someone could wear 8. A single colour arrangement – choose one colour to focus your arrangement on (plus green of course ) If any parents/family member has a morning free we would love a few helpers for this Friday morning, starting around 9:30 (not to help the kids make their flower or vege items – but to help us set up the hall). We would love to see you if you can make it. Entries to bring ON THE DAY Baking This year the children can enter their own homemade baking, which they can hand in that morning and it will be judged on the day. They can choose between pikelets and some type of slice They do need to bring along the recipe as well, and give their baking a name Indoor caged or aquatic animals If you are bringing along a bird, small mammal or fish/turtle it is very important that you bring everything they need so they are comfortable and cannot escape. Bring water, food and some shelter in case they need quiet time. (NO CATS OR DOGS AT SCHOOL PLEASE). Young Farmers Competition Our Young Farmers competition takes place on Calf Club Day and is open to students from Year 5 to 7. They compete in a number of interesting events, with the winner going on to represent Waioneke in the Helensville A & P show. Students interested in participating need to see Mrs Thorley. Also on the day will be the homemade baking, preserves and produce stall, a BBQ, the student council stall, and raffles PLUS the Young Farmers competition. Cake boxes should have come home today, if they have been damaged or misplaced we would still love you to make something yummy and bring it along on Saturday morning. Also if any parents/family members can assist on a stall during some of the day we would so appreciate your support, please fill in the attached slip and return this to school. Calendars and photo’s of school events Your chance to order your 2011 Calendar will be on display in the hall on Calf Club Day. Christmas cards are also available. Calendars are $12 each and the cards are $12.50. Photos taken of school events, including Senior Camp, will be displayed and available to purchase at Calf Club Day. Cost per photo is $1.00.
