GARY STRAWN PROGRAMS 9/22/10spg, rev. 7/15/16rem This document describes the downloading, installing, and general configuration for Gary’s programs. These are our mostused programs, for which there are separate guidelines as well: BibDelete/Suppress Location Changer VgerSelect For each new release of Voyager, Gary creates new releases of his programs. If he doesn’t get to it right away users will nudge him on the Voyager-L listserv. If you have a question or problem with a program, post to Voyager-L. Gary himself will often reply. Or you can email him directly. Upon installation, the program (.exe) and initialization (.ini) files are located as follows: Program BibDelete Location Changer Program (.exe) file C:\Program Files\SkeletonForGroup\BibDelete.exe C:\Program Files\LocationChanger\LocationChanger.exe C:\Program Files\VgerSele.exe VgerSelect Initialization (.ini) file C:\ users\[your login name]\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Windows\BibDelete.IN I C:\users\[your login name]\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Windows\VGERLOCS .INI C:\users\[your login name]\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Windows\VGERSELE. INI (Two other programs that may be useful are ChangeSubfieldText, and Change852Indicator. The second program does not show up on Gary Strawn’s main list of programs, but can be accessed at: http://files.library.northwestern.edu/public/Change852Indicator ) While the report folders for Gary’s programs can live anywhere it may be helpful for all of us to use the same location in Documents: C:\Users\[your user name]\Documents\BibDelete Reports C:\Users\[your user name]\Documents\Location Changer Reports C:\Users\[your user name]\Documents\VgerSelect Reports Steps for installing a program: 1) To download a program go to http://www.library.northwestern.edu/public or http://files.library.northwestern.edu/public/root/ and click the desired program. If there is more than one version, look for the one that matches our current version of Voyager. If we are at the latest version of Voyager (e.g. Version 8.21 = 2008.21), choose the most recent. If not, find the one that matches our version. a) To see what Voyager release we’re at: Go to C:\\Voyager\Catalog.exe [the program, not the Catalog folder] Right-click Choose Properties then Details and see File version. As of June 2016 it was: Gary Strawn programs -- p. 2 b) On Gary’s webpage you would select the most recent file or the one in which the first six digits match our current version of Voyager: Underpinning all this is a BatchCat.dll file. Much of the functionality of programs in Windows is provided by DLLs, or dynamic link libraries. If you go to C:\\Voyager\System (i.e. the System folder) you will see the current BatchCat file, e.g. BatchCat2009-20.dll. For more information see the BatchCat.dll Technical User’s Guide in the folder of Voyager current documentation. 2) Right-click the desired zip file and save to your desktop (or wherever you like to put these things) 3) Right-click the zip files and choose Extract Files 4) Open the folder. Using BibDelete as an example, the folder includes these files, which vary for each program: BatchCat.dll BibDelete.exe setup.exe 5) Click setup.exe to install the program, accepting all the defaults 6) Open the program. Click Options. There may be one or multiple tabs, but the options are similar from program to program, although Location Changer has more than the others. Here’s BibDelete as an example: ODBC connection name Voyager database prefix ODBC read-only signon Voyager cat/acq signon Voyager owning library Voyager cataloging location Folder that contains ‘Voyager.INI’ Folder for validation files Folder for reports NUC code Click OK, make default vger wesdb. <system connection signon, like you’d use to run an Access report> <your Voyager user name and password> WU, which will appear automatically after you fill in boxes underneath, close, and reopen the program. ocat Olin Cat. Off. C:\Voyager\ C:\Voyager\Catalog\TagTable\OCLC\ C:\users\<your username>\ My Documents\BibDeleteReports Leave blank
