Your child is almost ready to move on to pastures new but there are

P.E.
On Tuesdays, for the next few weeks, children will be working
with dance teacher Rachel. Our other session will focus on cricket
and rounders. Too many children are forgetting to bring in their P.E.
kits or have to be reminded to change their tops. I’m sure you can
appreciate this is a hygiene issue.
History
The topic being taught by Mrs Malone is Ancient Greece
and once this has been completed your child will be working on a
Memory Book.
Myddleton Grange
There are a couple of reply slips which need returning as soon as
possible. If you have any concerns about the visit please see me.
SEAL Day and Transition Day
To help your child with their move to secondary school he/ she
will be attending sessions there. I have been given dates for days
at St John Fisher. One will be a SEAL Day (Social and Emotional
Aspects to Learning) on June 13th. Please note this is normally
only for children attending St John Fisher. The other is a
transition day on Tuesday, 12th July. On both days, a school bus
will take them to and from SJF so your child needs to come to
school as normal. For those attending other schools you may
have already received transition details. Kirklees schools tend
to have the same transition day; those attending schools in the
Leeds or other areas should have received details. Please let
me know when their transition day is.
To help with the transition process, Churches together in
Birstall will be hosting a Fast Forward event. As yet I haven’t
received the date.
End of Year Production
This will be in July. More details will be given later.
Leavers’ Party
This will be on Friday, 15th July at Healds Hall, Liversedge.
Letters will be handed out at the end of May. The children will decide
what the theme will be.
Sports day will be in July (a date has yet to be arranged). Year
Six will be in charge of the events rather than participating in
them. This means they will be responsible for everything from
setting up the sports stations to demonstrating and recording.

R.E.
The two areas we will study this term are Work of the Apostles
and Called to Serve. Your child will be able to see how the apostles
were ordinary people with strengths and weaknesses. From this we
will discuss how the Holy Spirit brought about a great change within
them and see how their lives changed. Just as the apostles were
called to serve God, so are we. We are taught to live according to
Jesus’s teachings and in this topic your child will learn that we all
have different talents and gifts, including those received through the
Sacrament of Confirmation, to use for the benefit of others.
OUR CLASS MASS WILL BE CELEBRATED IN SCHOOL ON THURSDAY,
APRIL 28TH AT 9.30AM. ALL ARE WELCOME.
THE LEAVERS’ MASS WILL BE IN CHURCH ON THURSDAY, 14TH
JULY, AT 6.30pm. THIS IS A WONDERFUL CELEBRATION OF YOUR
CHILD’S LIFE AT ST PATRICK’S AND IT IS HOPED ALL CHILDREN
AND THEIR FAMILIES WILL ATTEND.
Maths
We will continue working on accuracy and speed; revising terms
such as mode, median, mean and range; know how to interpret charts
and properties of shape. The arithmetic test is expected to be 30
questions which will need to be answered in 30 minutes and will
include long multiplication and division; addition, subtraction,
multiplication and division of fractions and percentage. Papers 2 and 3
are reasoning and will be 40 minutes each. These will include
geometry, algebra and arithmetic.
As always, multiplication facts are essential not only for general
questions on time tables but for division, percentages, fractions and
finding multiples and factors of a number. Please help your child
practise these at home as well as other areas such as time using the
12 and 24 hour clock.
After the SATs, we normally link up with schools in the St John
Fisher pyramid to take part in a maths challenge. I haven’t received
details but I’m sure this will take place as normal. Regardless of
which school your child will be attending, all children will be included.
English
Hopefully you will have seen your child revising from their grammar
books. There are many terms which your child will need to remember
and there are hints contained within their books. New to this year
are relative clauses; knowing when a sentence uses a prepositional,
main, relative clause or a noun phrase; modal verbs to indicate
certainty and possibility; the present and past progressive tenses;
the subjunctive mood; coordinating and subordinating conjunctions
and how a comma can change the meaning of a sentence. These are in
addition to knowing, for example, what synonyms and antonyms are;
how to punctuate sentences correctly; using subordinate clauses; the
active and passive voice; the subject and object in a sentence. As you
can appreciate, there’s a lot of learning and it is important that your
child regularly revises from their grammar books.
Writing assessments will continue until the end of the year. As
explained at the beginning of the academic year, the goal posts have
moved and, earlier this year, another set of marking criteria was
introduced. To assist in marking, we have worked with a Kirklees
moderator and I will be attending a moderating session with all the
Year 6 teachers in the St John Fisher pyramid.
Reading comprehensions have been held almost every Wednesday
and for your children to continue improving they also need to read at
home. The tests assess their knowledge of vocabulary and their
ability to use clues to answer questions. Audio books will also help
children hear how sentences are formed and how to improve their
language skills.
Science
At the moment our topic is Let it Shine. The children know that a
light travels in a straight line and we have been carrying out
investigations using a torch as a light source. Other topics include
We’re Evolving and Electrifying. The whole school will be taking part
in a science week beginning May 16th.
