1. Read and study the business plan assigned to you on the associated list. The plan is on
http://www.bplans.com/samples/sba.cfm. The categories in which you’ll find your assigned
business plan include Computer, Consulting, Repair, and Reseller (CCRR); Construction and
Engineering (CE); Consulting (C); Manufacturing (M); Product Development (PD); and Professional
Services (PS). Scan/copy only the cover page and executive summary of your assigned business plan
and attach these to the exam. [50 points]
a. Clearly and succinctly explain what the main business opportunity is.
b. Explain why this is a good or bad opportunity. Citing relevant sections of the plan, provide an
organized, well-supported argument. Focus your thoughts, and don’t ramble.
c. Construct a SWOT chart for this business in the following form. Use the editable chart posted on
Piazza—import it into your exam solution document.
Enter only a word or a short phrase into the chart in each case. A minimum of 2 items and
maximum of 3 are required in each quadrant.
d. For each item you entered in the SWOT chart, provide a brief justification (minimum of 8
entries—one or two focused sentences for each entry).
2. Find an issued utility patent of your interest on the Internet. You can use the USPTO website or
freepatentsonline.com, etc. Study its novelty and value. Explain why it is a strong or weak patent.
Would it be likely to hold up in court? Attach the first page of the patent to your exam file. [30
points]
3. You are starting your own high-tech or engineering firm. Which type of corporate structure would
you select? Provide several (minimum of 4) specific reasons for your choice. [20 points]
