Key Coaching Points
ARRIVAL ACTIVITY
Twisting, turning and dodging to avoid opponents (low centre of gravity).
When being chased, can you ‘feint’ and ‘trick’ your opponent into thinking
you’re going to move one way before accelerating away in the opposite
direction.
When defending: react quickly to the movement of the players you are
chasing.
Work as a team to deceive and evade taggers.
Taggers to work as a team to catch the attackers-denying space and
isolating individuals.
Introduce ball for everyone.
Remove balls leaving a ball per group. Catchers can only catcher players
who are in possession of the ball.

Key Coaching Points
Players should look to make movements into space to receive the ball.
Players should look to receive the ball with a positive first touch into
space.
Players should look to run with the ball with speed and control towards
the ‘end zone’.
Players off the ball should look to find positions where they can support
the players in possession.
Players with the ball should look to run with the ball to draw defenders to
create space for the team mates who can receive the ball.
DRIBBLING AND
PASSING
Key Coaching Points
Recognition of potential passing options when the central attacker
player takes the ball-on towards goal.
Drawing defender and moving with the ball to create space for others to
receive passes.
Delivering balls to supporting players and weighting passes into space for
team mates to run onto.
Disguise passes to outwit defender.
Practice attacking with width.
Crossing and finishing.
GARETH SOUTHGATE
17-21 Age Range
Gareth Southgate was appointed England
Under 21 Head Coach in August 2013. He has
won the League Cup twice with Aston Villa
(1995/96) and as captain of Middlesbrough
(2003/04) respectively.
Making over 500 League Appearances he was
also part of the Crystal Palace team that won
the First Division Championship in 1993/94.
Along the way, Southgate was capped 57 times
for England, playing in the World Cup (1998)
and European Championships (1996, 2000)
