FALL SPORTS 2015 MEETING August 17, 2015 7:30pm WELCOME/OVERVIEW Congratulations for being a member of the Patriot HS athletics program Regulations/Expectations have been set by : - Virginia High School League (VHSL) - Prince William County Schools - Patriot High School VHSL POLICIES Enrollment Rule – student shall be officially enrolled at PHS Scholarship Rule – student shall be enrolled in and pass 5 or more credit classes used for graduation. Semester Rule – students have 8 consecutive semesters of eligibility from the time he/she first enters 9th grade Age Rule – student shall not have reached the age of 19 on or before August 1, 2014. VHSL POLICIES -- CONTINUED Transfer Rule – student shall not have enrolled in one high school and transferred or enrolled in another high school without a corresponding change in the residence of his/her parent or guardian (PW Specialty program transfers are included in this. Students and parents must file a waiver to the Superintendent to request eligibility) Energy Drinks – Athletes may not consume energy drinks prior, during, or after an athletic event Outside team membership – outside participation shall not conflict with practice or contest schedule of a VHSL event Limits of participation – a student can not participate at two levels on the same day. Contest limits are determined by the VHSL PRINCE WILLIAM AND VHSL POLICIES Player Ejections – students ejected from a contest may not participate in the next scheduled play date including post-season. Students ejected for fighting or cursing at an official will miss two scheduled events and have to take a VHSL sportsmanship course prior to returning. Meeting between student, parent, coach, and AD must happen prior to returning to games. PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY SCHOOLS POLICIES Academic Eligibility – students participating in athletic programs must pass at least 5 classes each semester with the minimum of 2 C’s and 3 D’s Attendance – students are required to attend school and class regularly. A student must attend school for at least one half of the day (3.5 hours of the instructional day) to participate in activities that day. Activity Insurance – parents are encouraged to purchase insurance for their students covering possible accident or injury in school sponsored events (Scholastic Accident Insurance) PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY SCHOOL POLICIES Bullying/Hazing -- hazing in any form shall not be tolerated Code of Behavior – students are responsible for their actions. The Code of Behavior is in effect at all times. Students found violating these expectations may be suspended or removed from the team. *Behavior outside of school may also affect the status of a student-athlete on a team. PATRIOT HIGH SCHOOL Mission: Patriot High School athletics should be an important element in the development of our students. Our mission is to provide a broad based athletic program available to all students in an environment where student athletes have the opportunity to reach their full potential through athletic competition, character development, community service, and teamwork. Athletic Handbook –www.patriotpioneers.org PATRIOT HIGH SCHOOL Transportation – students will ride to and from contests as a team Game Uniforms – will be collected after games and washed on site. Will be redistributed on game days. Game Day Dress – students will wear team spirit wear for away games and will dress up (business attire) for home games. Dress must be appropriate based on the Code of Behavior. Health and PE – students must participate in PE everyday, including game days. “Having a game today” is not an excuse for not participating in PE. If a student does not participate in PE, they will not be allowed to play in the game. Awards – a team banquet will be held at the conclusion of each season. Coaches will determine at the beginning of the season criteria for lettering. Injuries – injured athletes need to see Mr. McCullough (Athletic Trainer) when injured for assessment. Going to your personal doctor requires a doctors note to return to play. PATRIOT HIGH SCHOOL Lockers – each student will receive a lock and locker in the team room. All items must be secured. Coaches are not responsible for lost or stolen items. Equipment Responsibilities – student must maintain and return all equipment issued to them. Students are financially responsible for replacing missing items. Sportsmanship – spectators shall give encouragement -Inappropriate and unacceptable behavior may lead to removal of the spectator(s) Let the coaches coach, athletes compete, and officials officiate. Sportsmanship begins both on the playing field and in the bleachers. PATRIOT HS SCHOOL EXPECTATIONS Parent/Coach Communication – Coaches are not expected discuss any issues with parents after a game. Next day rule will be effect. Parents need to encourage their students to discuss any issues with the coach first, then parent/coach, then parent/coach/AD.
