Buroinjin Rules
Background: Buroinjin is a ball game for people of all ages. Variations of the game were played by
Aboriginal people across South East Australia. The game played today in the ACT is adapted from the game
played by the Kabi Kabi people of Southern Queensland. The game was played with a ball made of animal
skin, which was called a buroinjin. The ball, which was smaller than a soccer ball, was sewn with tendons
and stuffed.
Equipment: European handball, stumps
Field: 55m long x 30m wide (4 fields optimum)
Players: 8 a side (4 girls and 4 boys on the field at all times)
o Unlimited interchange – anytime (boy for boy, girl for girl)
o Can have 2 teams in an age group, but players can only play for one team.
o 12-14 students per team (4-6 subs per team).
Time: 7 minute halves
Game play & basic rules:
Moving with the ball: To begin play, the buroinjin is thrown into the air in the middle of the playing area.
Players can take 5 steps, one bounce and an additional 5 steps. You only get one bounce. Only five steps
can be taken after a bounce, regardless of how many steps taken before the bounce. (5 steps then
bounce, 5 more steps then pass)
The aim is to hit the wicket at the other end of the field (base included in stumps). There are no offside
player positions and the buroinjin can be thrown in any direction. The buroinjin may be passed from
player to player but it cannot be hit with a fist or kicked. If hit or kicked the buroinjin is turned over to the
other team to play from that position.
The game is played by running and passing and does not stop if a player drops the buroinjin. Players must
be on their feet to compete for the ball and they must not dive on the buroinjin if it is on the ground.
When the buroinjin goes out – thrown in from where it went out (sidelines), thrown in from anywhere on
the baseline. If both go for the ball and both pick it up – jump ball
Defence: When a player is touched with the buroinjin they must pass to another player, they have 2
seconds and 2 steps to release the ball. The ball can only be intercepted and cannot be taken from
another player.
The D: Can shoot from anywhere outside of the D. Can shoot in the air, need to release before hitting the
ground. Defence preventing someone scoring (between them and the stumps) - Attacker gets free shot
from the top of the D. Accidental offside means free pass from the top of the D. If attacking player goes
into the D the defending team restart, throw in from the baseline. If the attacking player’s throw goes dead
in the D, throw from the baseline for the defenders. If the ball comes off a defender and goes dead,
possession goes to the attacking team at the top of the D.
If tagged whilst going for a shot, you can’t shoot. If player shoots after tag, a changeover where it
happened. Restart after a goal – throw in from the baseline.
