Indus International School Chess Team, wins 4 Gold Medals at Malaysian Chess Festival and Qualifies for the European and American International Chess Circuits (Under 12 Category). Indus International School Bangalore, participated in the Malaysian Chess Festival 2016 (Under 12 Category), and did exceptionally well to win the 'Best Private School' award, 4 Gold medals and 1 Bronze medal. With this phenomenal achievement Indus Chess team is qualified to play at the European and American Chess Championships. The Malaysian Chess Festival is an Asian Circuit Chess Event which is a mandatory chess event to obtain a qualification to play at the European Circuit and World Circuit Chess Championship. 64 Schools and 256 players from across Asia participated in the event. Following are our achievements: Page 1 of 2 1) Ryoya Ogino (Grade 7) won a Gold medal, played in Board-1 and scored 6.5/9 with a rating per of 1588 2) Naren Ramesh (Grade 6) won a Gold medal, played in Board-2 and scored 3/9 with a rating per of 1258 3) Aniketh Kalagara (Grade-5), won a Gold medal, played in Board-3 and scored 3/9 with a rating per of 1284 4) Krish Kerkar (Grade-5), won a gold medal scored 8/9 (stood fifth in the tie-break) with a rating RP of 1674 5) Krish Kerkar (Grade 5), won a Bronze medal, scored 5/6 in the DATCC (Under 10 category) Says Naren Ramesh of Grade 6 “I felt excited and elated, because it was the first time I participated in an international event. I realized that the key to winning in a team event is that you need to rely on each other, work together and help each other win. My potential was identified at school and we were given a lot of training and encouragement to excel in the game. We were even provided a software free of charge by the school on which we could practice at home’’ Ryoya Ogino of Grade 7 a Japanese student exclaimed “This is the second time, I have won an international event and I dream of becoming a grandmaster.”Aniketh Kalagara feels it is the first step towards realizing his dream of winning international chess championships. Mrs. Kalagara parent of one of the winners commented “His interest and potential was identified in school and he was given specialised training from grade 3. Teachers and the chess coach Mr. Rohan have been instrumental in training, encouraging and motivating him. He was not only given exposure in local events but guided to strike a balance between academics and chess. Prior to the event students were provided with rigorous training, which required them to attend school during weekends as well”. Mrs. Sarojini Rao, Principal Indus International School, Bangalore expressed delight at this exceptional achievement. Says Rao “Education at Indus emphasizes on the concept of WholeEducation. Latent talent in students is identified and nurtured. Students are provided platforms through which they can develop their interests. Clubs such as Horse-riding, Ballet and Chess are examples of such platforms.
