S Whillans introduced himself as Chair of the meeting and
asked members of the meeting to introduce themselves.
L Gilchrist introduced herself and explained about the
change of name from Department to Faculty Council.

L Gilchrist and P Hutchison have organised laptops for
PLPs.
Beauty Therapy
There are no students on placement at Stobo this year.
Enrolment and Induction
HNC students were enrolled on their first day.

L Gilchrist has spoken to the Library staff regarding
computers being slow.
Hairdressing
P Hutchison has addressed students not having
demonstrations in class.
P Hutchison discussed with her team an instance when
students not being told of things happening eg. Extension
course.

Class Representatives Feedback from Block 1
Level 1 Hairdressing
PLP – ongoing but students find pointless.
Theory – enjoy, some students lose interest.
Practical – enjoy.
Core Skills –
Citizenship – Children in need and raffle.
Sustainability – left over tints put into bin.
Level 3B Hairdressing
PLP – student feel is a waste of time, would rather spend
time on practical.
Theory – good.
Practical – students worried about time off because of bad
weather.
Citizenship – calendar, now on sale.
Employability – fine.
Curriculum for Excellence – do not fully understand.

Level 2 Beauty Therapy
PLP – students find pointless, taking them out of practical.
Theory - problems logging on for online assessments.
Practical – require more products.
Core Skills – students would like told if lecturer not
available for class.
Citizenship - eyebrow wax or file and polish nails for £2.
P Hutchison will discuss with lecturers as this should be
done either at lunch time or evenings.
Employability – Hot wax course and air brush make-up
course in February.

Level 1 Catering
PLP – students finding too much to fill in but are enjoying
setting targets.
Theory – classes too long but enjoying learning.
Practical – classes too busy, too many people but enjoying
getting to cook. Feel there is a lot of food waste.
Core Skills – not relevant, mature students enjoying but
younger students are not.
Citizenship – everyone worked well and enjoyed.
Sustainability – waster a lot of food but use local suppliers.
Level 2 Catering
PLP – students finding too much to fill in but are enjoying

Theory – classes too long but enjoying learning.
Practical – classes too busy, too many people but enjoying

PLP- students happier not doing PLP’s on computers.
Theory – not enough time for portfolio work.
Practical – worried about buses for night service. Problems
with gas/heating. V MacDonald will contact R Hewitt.
VMacD
Core Skills – finished.
Citizenship – some students enjoyed, some didn’t.
Sustainability – more information on different projects.
Employability – good work placements but need to be more
organised.
BTEC Award
PLP – students don’t like.
Students like being in on a Thursday for practical.
BTEC Diploma
PLP – students don’t like as it takes time away from
practical.
Theory – Fine.
Practical – Fine.
Core Skills – Done.
Sustainability – experiencing problems with bins, L Gilchrist
added that Recoup is hoping to have bins in place in the
New Year.
Employability – art talk in Peebles. Students would like to
be out on placements. V MacDonald to discuss with staff.
VMacD
HNC Visual Communications
PLP – Done.
Theory – Good.
Practical – IMAC’s good.
Core Skills – an embedded part of the course.
Employability – students have a brief for each project, John
acts as the client and students have to stick to the deadline
and present final designs.

Level 3A Hairdressing
PLP – struggle to access as passwords are not working.
Theory – getting on well, creative learning.
Practical – could do with more clients, enjoying
demonstrations but could do with more.
Citizenship – enjoyed doing something different, being able
to be creative and working as a team.
Employability – enjoyable.
Level 1A and 1B Hairdressing
PLP – some students have set out aims, younger students
find it quite forgetful.
Theory – students enjoying with different learning styles.
Practical – now enjoying classes.
Core Skills – younger students find frustrating and lose
interest.
Citizenship – children in need cake sale, raffle, fancy dress
and ladies night.
Sustainability – left over tint put in bins.
Employability – employers from salons coming in to do
talks.
Curriculum for Excellence – students working together for
children in need and others are organising a ladies night.
Level 3B Beauty Therapy
PLP – find time consuming and pointless but course tutor
meetings are fine.
Theory – behind on assessments due to weather. Students
feel if they get too far behind they would be prepared to
miss placements to catch up.
Practical – set back due to bad weather but whole class
coping with practical assessments.
Citizenship – ladies evening arranged between both
classes.
Employability – all but 1 student have a placement.

Curriculum for Excellence – still carrying out on a daily
basis.

Learner Feedback
L Gilchrist passed round the above handout and asked
students to discuss with their groups and email either
herself or K McDonald with actions.
Students would like the following to happen –
 Returning students enrolled in May
 Workshops set up on completing Bursary forms

Face Book
Reps to go back and highlight to students issues with using
face book which can be seen as cyber bullying.
Weather
L Gilchrist made the meeting aware of a document which
has been circulated regarding adverse weather conditions.
Lecturers will place work on moodle for students to access
to continue their learning.
Students who are experiencing problems accessing their
college email should forward their personal email to
lecturers.
Some students are experiencing problems as they are on
the old windows version at home. L Gilchrist will look in to
this.

Hot Wax Course
Beauty Therapy students are asking why they had to pay
for a hot wax course when it is an essential part of their
course. P Hutchison to check this.
