Re: NOMINATIONS TO ESSEX COUNTY ACADEMIES AND PRE- SCREENING
As you may be aware England Netball has an Excel Pathway, the aim of the Pathway is to
develop athletes with the attributes to attain excellence. Further information on the pathway can be

In 2013, Essex will be once again consolidating their screening process within the county to take
place once a year (March) for both Satellite and County Academies and County Pre Screening for
Regional Academy.
On Sunday March 24th 2013 from 10am to 2pm will start the Satellite and County Academy
screening and County Pre Screening process for Year 7/8, Year 9/10 and Year 11/12 (Year 12’s
should be exceptional, who have improved greatly since last scouted or new to the
system). At this screening players may be selected for the Academy Summer Camps or invited to
Cross County Screening on Sunday 21st April 2013 or take no further part in screening.
Please note for Year 11/12 scouts will be looking at those with the potential to move onto
Cross County Screening and the County Plus Academy starting in the Autumn and not
Academy Summer Camps
This will include players both currently in the talent system or those new to it.
The trials will take place in Colchester.
Essentially this is the first stage of Regional Screening (please see attached pathway document).
If you currently have players in the Essex Academy system they will automatically go to the
screening and academy coaches will complete the paperwork for this, so teachers and club
coaches please don’t nominate these players. Players in the Regional Academies system will be
invited to another screening round and will be notified accordingly so please don’t nominate these
players.
Should you wish to nominate player(s) to attend the screening it is important that you have
attended the England Netball ‘Talent Identification and Selection Workshop’ or the new
‘County Talent Identification Workshop'. These workshops provide teachers and club coaches
with the knowledge and understanding of the characteristics of a talented athlete in order to
nominate athletes to an appropriate level within the Excel pathway.
If you do not have a teacher or club coach who has attended a workshop or any of the players
cannot make either of these dates please notify Cathy Chart by Friday 8th February 2013 by email
[email protected] or phone 01375 671034 so that we can send out a scout to
observe your players and advise accordingly but please note the scouts are volunteers and the
club / school will be expected to reimburse travel expenses at 40p per mile or pay a minimum of
£10 directly to the scout.
If you as a teacher or club coach have any NEW U14’s or U16’s who you think may have been
missed (e.g. completely new to the screening/academies process) or have made great
improvements since they were last screened and are not in the current Academies, then please
nominate. U19’s should NOT be nominated but if you have any exceptional U19’s that again may
be new to the system or have greatly improved please contact Chris Laundy the Regional Head
Scout on 01268 533785.
A maximum of 6 players who are not currently in the Academies system may be nominated per
club or school, ideally three for U14 and three U16 screening, but this is flexible. If you strongly
believe you have more than 6 players that should be nominated please contact Chris Laundy the
Regional Head Scout on 01268 533785, who will advise you what to do.
We would like to stress that although we wish to see the players in their preferred
positions, screening is NOT based on how good their position play is, but rather
demonstrating the above skills in which ever position they may be in. Please note players
may be asked to play out of position at screening, BUT will be given the opportunity to play
in one of their preferred position at least twice.
Should you wish to nominate player(s) to attend the screening please complete the attached
player nomination form and send to the address on the bottom of the nomination form by
Monday 11th March 2013. We are only accepting paper copies so please do not email or fax
as these will not be accepted. Please be careful to direct your players to the correct date
especially as they are age related!
If any players are unable to attend these screening dates it will only be in exceptional
circumstances that a player will be looked at outside of these dates. Please notify Cathy Chart
when sending in your nomination if this is a possibility, but you should make every effort to ensure
your player attends.
Nominations received after Monday 11th March 2013 will not be accepted for
screening.
Please also note that players who turn up on the screening date who have not completed an entry
form will not be able to take part in the screening, so please pass on the attached player letter and
registration form and ask the players to post to the contact on the bottom of the form (or perhaps
you could collect them and send them in)
Players should wear a white t-shirt and dark skirt/shorts and no club colours. Appropriate footwear
is essential and dark soled shoes are not permitted.
The cost for screening will be £10 per player, this will be payable on the day.
