Dr. S. Subramony a scientist retired from DRDO, has over 35 years of
experience in
Military Psychology. Personality Assessment, Personnel
Selection, and Development of Psychological tests are his specialized
areas . He is a specialist in Assessment Centre Technique in Personnel
Selection. He has an active interest in areas like conflict management,
developing negotiation skills, and training interviewers in enhancing

Dr. Subramony did his post graduation in Psychology from University of Kerala, in
1971, with specialization in Industrial Psychology & Social Psychology. Later, he
completed his PhD from Kerala University, in Organizational Psychology.
In 1973, he joined the Naval Psychological Research Unit (NPRU), under the Defence
Research and Development Organization (DRDO).
He was involved in branch/trade
allocation of sailors based on their aptitudes and abilities. In this connection, he
developed a number of aptitude and intelligence tests. In NPRU, he was also involved
in personality assessment of naval officers as well as selection of Pre-flight trainee
officers for the Naval Aviation Branch.
Afterwards, he was posted to the Selection Centre South, Bangalore, where he, as a
selection board psychologist, was given the responsibility of selecting officers for the
Armed Forces. This tenure helped him in specializing in personnel selection using
psychological tests and also in personality assessment using a variety of techniques.
During his tenure in the Selection Centre, he obtained M.B.A from IGNOU, with
specialization in Human Resource Management.
Later, he was posted to the Defence Institute of Psychological Research, Delhi,
where he served as the Head of Personality Division and also as the Head of Technical
Coordination (Tech-coord). He was the coordinator of the research projects for
developing the new
selection system, and conducted All India Standardization
Conferences and Tri-service Conferences. He was permanent member of the training
division faculty that conducts several training programmes throughout the year, for
Interviewing Officers, Group Testing Officers, Technical Officers, Psychologists and
Junior Commissioned Officers of the Armed Forces. He
was regularly teaching
personality theory, psychological assessment techniques, and psychometrics. He was
the

director
for

courses
(for
Technical
Officers/Psychologists) and Continuing Education Programmes (for DRDO scientists),
between 2002 and 2008.
He was a member of the DRDO team that visited Nagapattinam, to counsel tsunami
victims, in January, 2005
One of the most significant achievements of Dr. Subramony, was the International
Conference in Personnel Selection, conducted in New Delhi, in 2007, for which he was
the Convener. It was hailed as one of the best conferences conducted by DRDO.
Eminent Psychologists like Prof. Robert Hogan, Prof. Philip Lievens, Dr. Viswesvaran,
Dr. JP Das, Dr. Scott Hamilton etc were some of the participants.
Dr. Subramony retired from DRDO in 2008. He is currently teaching in IGNOU for both
PG course in Psychology and M.B.A. and also guiding research scholars.


Born in Vaikom (Kottayam District) in 1948. Did schooling at Government Boys’
High School, Vaikom. Graduation from Maharaja’s College, Ernakulam.

Wife Mrs. V. Bhagavathy, a Post Graduate in Statistics from University of
Kerala. Only one son, who is a computer scientist, working in Artificial
Intelligence Group in C-DAC, Pune.

Formally trained in Carnatic Music vocal.

Loves reading scientific books. Favorite authors are Stephen Hawking, Leonard
Mlodinov, Michio Kaku, Daniel Kahneman and VS Ramachandran.
