Product Launch Brief
D8115 Matt Clearcoat
D8117 Semi-Gloss Clearcoat
Product
Launch:
D8115 Matt Clearcoat
Background:
The use and importance of low-gloss clearcoats is increasing, especially with
the growth in full body low-gloss finishes used, for example, by Mercedes. In
2008 PPG launched D8113 to provide a dedicated solution for the repair of
vehicles finished entirely in an extremely low-gloss clearcoat (like
Lamborghini), but other levels still have to be achieved using standard
clearcoats and matting agents in complicated mixing ratios.
D8117 Semi-Gloss Clearcoat
PPG are now launching the next generation of dedicated low-gloss clearcoats.
These 2 new products can be used alone, or together in simple mixing ratios,
to achieve a wide range of final gloss levels; providing an easy to use and
flexible system which results in a perfect match to any low-gloss OEM finish.
Proposition &
Business Case:
PPG is committed to helping Distributers and Repairers achieve profitable
growth by delivering products that are:
An accurate match to OEM finishes
Easy to use
Easy to sell
The launch of these new clearcoats supports this strategy and provides an
easy and flexible way of matching any of the increasingly popular low-gloss
OEM finishes.
These new clearcoats can be used alone (for example D8115 can be used for
the very low-gloss finish on a Lamborghini) or mixed together to achieve a full
range of low-gloss clearcoats for any full body or trim finish. The mixing ratios
are simple, and since both products have the same activation ratio, they can
be blended in any ratio required. This flexibility enables the painter to make
fine adjustments and allow for the normal gloss variation, due to colour, model,
position of the repair on the vehicle, or bodyshop conditions.
D8115 and D8117 are both easy to apply, and easy to keep clean and denib,
ensuring reduced process times compared to existing systems. They can be
used over rigid plastics without the need for special additives, and provide an
even and tough finish.
With this launch PPG have developed an adaptable and easy to use solution
to achieve the best match to any OEM finish.

Benefits
A simple and adaptable process to
provide an accurate match to any lowgloss OEM finish, ensuring customer
satisfaction
Increased process efficiency
Simple solution for all low-gloss repairs
To coincide with the launch of these new clearcoats, some formulation
information in GRID will be updated:
 All low-gloss basecoat and clearcoat formulations will now have the
basecoat colour and a comment providing a low-gloss band (FC01-05) for
the clearcoat (see below). The painter will be directed towards the TDS to
find the mix ratio required for each band using D8115 and D8117.
Use FC03 low-gloss clearcoat (as a guide). Refer to
datasheet for details.
 Each band (FC01-05) covers a range of gloss
levels and the mix ratios provided for each band
will just be a starting point for the painter, and the
TDS will recommend that test panels are
produced to check for colour and gloss against
the car or car part being repaired.

 With the CD update delivered in January 2012, any current
recommendation for popular low-gloss basecoat and clearcoat formulations
in GRID will be moved to ‘Historic’.
 The matt/eggshell/semi-gloss mix ratios on the TDS/RTS using existing
standard clearcoats and matting agent will remain after the launch, but will
be removed at the end of March. It is not possible to achieve FC01 with
this method.
