Teacher Guide This lesson is designed to teach kids to ask a critical thinking question that you can’t just put into a search box to solve. To do that, we encourage them with smaller questions that search can help them answer. Make sure that you read the notes for each slide: they not only give you teaching tips but also provide answers and hints so you can help the kids if they are having trouble. Remember, you can always send feedback to the Bing in the Classroom team at [email protected]. You can learn more about the program at bing.com/classroom and follow the daily lessons on our Partners In Learning site. Want to extend today’s lesson? Consider using Skype in the Classroom to arrange for your class to chat with another class in today’s location. And if you are using Windows 8, you can also use the Bing apps to learn more about this location and topic; the Travel and News apps in particular make great teaching tools. What role does hunting play in our ecosystem? © Paul Horsley/Corbis What role does hunting play in our ecosystem? The “island” portion of Elk Island National Park is purely metaphorical. Established in 1913 in the wilderness east of Edmonton, Alberta, the Canadian park is surrounded by farmland and other development. It provides an island of safe haven to dwindling populations of elk and beaver, which had been overhunted. Later, wood bison joined the population in an effort to help bolster their numbers as well. Canada geese use the park’s many lakes as a stopover during their migration. They’re part of a population of at least 250 different bird species that make either a permanent or temporary home in this oasis of northern prairie just beyond the bustling city.
