Motivation

Games that are played in an AR environment have a
number of advantages over traditional desktop games,
but most AR games played from a first person
perspective.

Objective

This paper developed an AR RTS game,
ARBattleCommander, which differ from previous
work in the field.

Introduction

First person shooter (FPS)

Placing the player in the viewpoint of the main character
Navigating the environment & fighting enemies from this perspective
Ex : Quake, Doom
Real-time strategy (RTS)
─
─
─
─
Giving the player a disembodied god-like
viewpoint
Using commands to guide their forces
Ex : Dune 2, AOE
Having physical limitations

Method

AR-VR transition
─

Many VR techniques could be applied
 Flying : simply translation of the user’s viewpoint within the virtual
environment
 Scaling : easily to overview
 Grabbing : manipulation object within arms reach
 Trade-off
Possession
─
It allows the user to select any of the game units that they control, and
take control of the unit’s view of the world.

Method (cont.)
─
Other problem arises with this technique when the user wishes to
quickly reach an area not occupied by any friendly units.

Observer objects : virtual objects created to make possession easier &
efficient to use



Using command
Intelligent autonomous agents
ARBattleCommander

Command
Unit : Standard & Rocket infantry, Tank, Artillery, Helicopter
Features : real-world scale
Interface : hand-held push-button device
Game server : refresh the data in the game
Tinmith System : DIS →TCP/UDP

Informal study

Initial testing
─
─

First set of outdoor tests (no observer object)
─
─
─
─

Client-Server communications
Information display
Selection : 1 metre ﹤→30 metres; there are two problems in the dense
group
Movement : long distances
Situational awareness : no sound or units will obstruct the player’s view
input
Second set of outdoor tests (including observer object)
─
─
─
Selection & movement
Situational awareness
AR-VR balance : 90% was spent in the AR views

Conclusions


This paper proposed a new technology, possession, to
overcome the physical limitations while playing an
AR-RTS game.
It also have developed a AR-RTS game,
ARBattleCommander, to show that we will feel more
immersive using AR platform.

Augmented Reality

AR describes a technology in which
a real environment is extended by
additional “virtual” information.

It have been implemented in variant field, such as entertainment or medical.
