AC2017 Observation Round details • Objectives • 1-2 Quizmaster(s) to each team • Theory Observation Paper • Activated in case of uncertain weather or raining • Rebased score to accommodate patchy skies • Split into Team A and B to tackle different tasks • E.g. School X Team A and Team B • Each made up of 2-3 • Format of Assessment AC2017 Observation Round details • 4 Part assessment; Open Universe • You will be assessed on telescope handling • Familiarity of equipment and night sky • Constellations and bright objects that can be seen • It is intended to be a simulation of a sidewalk of sorts, where you are to be aware of what can be seen and how to find them. Basic Rules AC2017 Observation Round details • You have until 10pm to complete the paper in a team of 5 • You may bring any reference materials, subject to approval (submit at the start of Day 1 during attendance taking) • If weather/logistics prove unsuitable • Activate theory paper if bad weather • Theory paper may be interrupted at any point in time if the weather improves. AC2017 Observation Round details • Theory Observation Paper • Activated in case of uncertain weather or raining • Rebased score to accommodate patchy skies Scoring (NOTE THE CHANGES) AC2017 Observation Round details • Part I: Telescope Setup (15%, all weather) • Part II: Boresighting (15%, all weather) • Part III: Thematic Objects (40%) • Part IV: Free For All (FFA) Category (30%) In the event of bad weather, the theory paper will be weighted appropriately with the remaining 30% AC2017 Observation Round details Part I: Telescope Set-up • You’ll have to setup and align your telescope finder properly. • When you are ready, inform the QM and he/she will check the alignment and setup • QM will sign and comment on the mark sheet AC2017 Observation Round details Part II: Boresighting • At a specific preannounced time, each individual in the team will have to boresight a target • You’ll attempt to centre an object in the eyepiece field of view without the aid of a finder • All teams will start at the same time • Each individual gets 2 attempts, after each attempt, the QM will look into the eyepiece first, followed by the student. AC2017 Observation Round details Part II: Boresighting • If the object is not in the field of view after the first attempt, the student may use the finder in the second attempt. • Teams may no proceed to Parts II and IV until all its members have cleared this round. AC2017 Observation Round details Part III: Thematic Objects • A list of objects/object descriptions (and your observation log sheets) will be given to you after completion of Part II. Each object is worth 4%. • Upon finding the object, QM will verify and countersign the list. • Reference materials may be used from this point onwards. Part IV: FFA • Teams may find any object that desire in the specified list. AC2017 Observation Round details • Show the object and note it in your observation log; QM will verify and countersign • You are expected to know the object’s common name/catalogue number. • QMs may compare the image to a sky atlas/your observation plan for reference • You cannot repeat the objects found in Part III • You can however do both parts concurrently. AC2017 Observation Round details Other notes • Object must be visible to the naked eye through the telescope (averted vision/slight tapping allowed) • You should advise the QM accordingly as if he were a member of public. • We have prepared OIII and UHC light pollution filter for verification as well. • Head QM decision is final AC2017 Observation Round details • More details on actual day.
