With an overpowering front line and just enough of Dexter
McCluster, the Packers won their first playoff game since 1991 and
just second in nine postseason tries with a dominating 23-0 victory
over Dunedin in a Class 5A regional.
“Venice High School has an amazing offensive; their quarterback
is number one in the division and keeps breaking records, but I think
we showed we’ve got what it takes to stop even the best offensive,”
said varsity coach Bob Weiner, "Tonight they just knocked on the
door and knocked on the door and we wouldn't let them in."
The Packers (8-3) held Dunedin to 59 yards total offense,
including just 10 in the second half, to avenge a loss to Dunedin
earlier this season. It was Largo's fourth shutout this season.
"We wanted to show them tonight that we had the best defense,"
said senior lineman Derrick Holte, "We came out and beat them in the
head. Last time, they did it to us. Tonight it was our turn, and we
made sure we did the job."
The 08-09 Central Boys Basketball team looks to be one of the
best in school history. The Rams started their soon to be memorable
season in the tough Mundelein Thanksgiving Tournament.
The Rams opened their season against host Mundelein High
School, a team ranked as one of the best in the area. The Rams
showed how good they were with a decisive 82-64 win over the
Mustangs. Senior Kevin O’Rourke stared in the game with 24 points
and a memorable dunk on a breakaway near the end of the third
quarter.
“That win really brought our confidence up as a team. We started
the season really well against a great team,” said Senior David Bell.
The Rams then took on a very talented Loyola Academy. The
Rams led most of the game and into the fourth quarter but the
Ramblers pulled away at the end, winning 57-49. Junior Andrew
Sipes led the Rams with 16 points and 10 rebounds and Senior Mike
Brumm chipped in with 14 points.
