Spring term newsletter no. 10 – 20 March 2015
Please read!
Up-date since the last newsletter:

Red Nose Day 2015 at St Oswald’s was a huge success with over £300 raised. Many thanks for all the donations and a
special mention to Abi Unsworth in Y6 who raised £50 by inventing her own game of ‘Guess the name of the horse!’ Best
joke in the bucket: “Why did the boy eat his homework? Because he thought it was a piece of cake!”

We had six new arrivals in Year 1 this week when the chicks hatched! Fantastic awe and wonder moments. The chicks will
be going back to Bowland Farm next week.

Well done to the Netball and Football teams who were playing their league matches again this week. Great teamwork!
Netball A team won both their matches and the B team won one of their matches. Football A team had two wins and the B
team won one and lost one, the C team also won one and lost one. Last league game next week – fingers crossed for a top
3 place!

Many thanks if you came along to our information evening about keeping your child safe in the on-line world. The parents
who came along found it very useful. It also gives me the opportunity to reinforce to all parents that it is so important that
you are aware of what your child is accessing and possibly signing up to. Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook, etc. all have
terms and conditions that clearly state that the user has to be 13 years and over. As a school, we have had to deal with
several instances now where children as young as 8 years old have held one of these accounts and used it irresponsibly,
causing a great deal of trouble and upset, not to mention the time taken to deal with such matters. As a school, if an issue
is brought to our attention, we have a safeguarding duty to deal with it and we will always alert parents. As parents, we
have the ultimate responsibility to know what our children are doing in the on-line world. We have also had to deal with
inappropriate group chats and ‘X box live conversations’. Some children do not have the maturity or self-awareness to
understand what they are posting can be misinterpreted.
Recommendations:
(a) Check what your child is doing, (b) limit ‘screen time’ and (c) remove devices from bedrooms at night.

Huge congratulations to Megan Holmes, Joe Bates and Isabelle Higginson who played guitar as a trio for the Penwortham
Music Festival last night and won the trophy! They gained a ‘distinction’ for their performance. Well done!

Y6 have all passed their Level 3 of the Heartstart Emergency Life Support Programme. Congratulations!

As a school, we were very excited to be part of the historical moment for the solar eclipse! We streamed BBC news footage
into our Golden Assembly and experienced the eerie silence from the birds and the darkness descending. The next solar
eclipse will be 12 August 2026!
