in a positive environment
Topics of Discussion

Different approaches
– ADKAR
– Do it… NOW!
– Let’s do it together


Best Practices
How do you deal with those who
refuse?
Change Management
Approach
ADKAR
-Awareness
-Desire
-Knowledge
-Ability
-Reinforcement
“a goal-oriented change management model that
allows teams to focus their activities on specific
results” Prosci (1994)
ADKAR





Make staff AWARE of the drivers for change.
Provide motivation or DESIRE for staff to
participate.
Give staff the KNOWLEDGE and skills needed to
enact the change.
Make sure the tools & support provide the
ABILITY to behave differently.
Monitor and REINFORCE the change.
John Shaw, Prosci, 2013.
Do it… NOW!


Forceful
Results are usually negative:
– Mental Stress
– Loss of Loyalty
– Increased time away from work

Pushing (vs. Pulling)
– Resistance does not go away – but you
CAN channel it in the right direction
Let’s Do It Together!



Allow staff to express concerns (let
them dump their bucket)
Empower staff by asking “What can
we do to make this change work?”
Guide staff through the learning curve
– most change is seen as loss of
power because knowledge is power.
Best Practices
Discussion Time!
Why Do Staff Resist?








Loss of status or job security
Non-reinforcing reward systems (intrinsic
rewards?)
Surprise and fear of the unknown
Peer pressure
Climate of mistrust
Organizational politics
Fear of failure
Lack of tact or poor timing
What Do We Do With those
who resist?




Praise in public and correct in private –
but DO address resistance formally
Have a one-on-one discussion
Understand their perception of the
change
Accept that some staff may separate
Questions and Answers
Questions?
I might have an answer, but I believe
we all learn from each other!
