POOCH Guidelines
Problem
In a single statement summarise what the issue / problem is.
Explain how this issue is a current health issue in today’s society
Explain how this is a social justice issue and how it can affect your health.
How is it unfair or unjust?
Options
Come up with more than three options for what the person could do to
solve their problem. What could be done to make it more equitable?
Think about current trends and issues and draw conclusions from the
information that is presented. Distinguish between the relevant and
irrelevant information to come up with a range of possible solutions /
strategies.
One option must be to access a health agency or support service
Outcomes
For each option you have given critique and analyse what the possible
outcomes could be (positive and negative). Include your own ideas and
opinions
How does it affect the person in the scenario, families and wider
community?
Add a ‘feelings face’ to show how you think the person would feel if they
chose that option and had that outcome to live with.
Choice
Make a choice. Which option and outcome is the best possible strategy to
address the issue.
How did it go / Why
did you choose this option
Predict the overall outcome with the solution you suggested.
Discuss how this option is addressing the social justice issue, what needs
to be done?
How will their personal health and wellbeing be influenced by this
choice?
How will this choice affect community health and wellbeing?
Clearly present your views and opinions, clarifying your own attitudes
and values in relation to the issue when you discuss why you chose this
option.
Scenario 1
Paul has always had a large group of friends. He is 16, at high school and has developed feeling towards one of
his male friends. Most of Paul’s friends are sexually active and talk about their experiences with girls openly. The
boy Paul is attracted to never talks about his sexual experiences and Paul suspects he may also have feelings for
Paul.
When his friends talk about sex Paul feels uncomfortable about discussing his intimate details out loud so usually
tries to change the subject before he feels pressured to share. Most of Paul’s friends come across as being
homophobic and say some really cruel things about gay men.
Paul is feeling a lot of pressure to have sex with a girl and then talk about it with his mates. The stress of the
whole situation is really getting to him as he doesn’t even really know which sex he is attracted to. He feels as
though his friends are going to start rejecting him if he doesn’t start conforming to their expectations.
What could Paul do?
Scenario 2
Sarah is a virgin and wants to stay that way. She is 16 and has always promised herself that she would wait until
she was considered an adult (18) and knew she was making the right decision before she had sex. The only
problem is that Sarah has a long-term boyfriend that she would like to move forward with and he is starting to
really pressure her.
Sarah’s boyfriend is starting to use emotional blackmail by threatening to leave her and is starting to isolate
Sarah from her friends. He has become very controlling and manipulative. They have been together for a really
long time and Sarah feels it is only the sex situation that is causing things to change.
Sarah would like to explore and develop their relationship from a different perspective that allows for intimacy
and building the relationship without having to have sex and break Sarah’s vow.
What could Sarah and her boyfriend do?
Scenario 3
Kay has always felt trapped in her body. She believes she should have been born a boy. Sadly Kay has had to grow
up in a family of real girly girls. Her Mum and 3 sisters all wear dresses and make-up every day and spend
hundreds of dollars on perfume, jewelry, designer bags and shoes, hairstyles and fashion magazines. But Kay
doesn’t want a bar of it, it feels false and wrong. Kay wants to cut her hair short and wear jeans not high heels
and skirts.
Kay has spent her life surrounded by the extreme sex-role stereotypes and role models that portray the ‘perfect
woman’. She is so confused about who or what she is because she is not like her sisters or mum.
What could Kay do?
