Contrast
There are many times that people who are in the import-export business have to write to his/her counterparts or colleagues—
either superiors or subordinates—about the dissimilarities of some products, people, or organizations, etc. That is the time that a
paragraph of contrast is needed.
Actually there is more than one way to write a paragraph of contrast. However, perhaps the easiest way to start the paragraph
of contrast is with a topic sentence stating that two things are different. Then the first product, person, or organization compared is
written about. After that the second product, person, or organization is described. Finally the conclusion can be given as the last
sentence of the paragraph. The following is the outline of the paragraph of contrast.
Outline of a Paragraph of Contrast
Topic Sentence (A sentence stating that two things are different)
Details of one of the two things being contrasted
6
Details of the other thing being contrasted
Last sentence as a conclusion (Optional)
Signal words usually used in paragraph of contrast are:
‘However,……..’
‘On the other hand,…..’
‘On the contrary,…….’
In contrast,…….’
Example
Export activities may take different forms, including indirect exporting and direct exporting. Most of indirect exporting
activities do not provide the firm much experience in conducting international business since the activities are not part of conscious
7
internationalization strategy by the firm. Indirect exporting may occur when a firm sells its product to a domestic customer who exports
the product in either its original form or a modified form. A firm may also sell goods to a foreign firm’s local subsidiary who transports
the products to the foreign country. On the other hand, through direct exporting, the firm gains valuable expertise about operating
internationally and specific knowledge concerning the individual countries in which it operates. Direct exporting involves sales to
customers-either distributors or end-users-located outside the firm’s home country.

Directions: Rearrange the following
sentences into a proper order by typing the
number of each sentence in the blank. The
first sentence is identified for you.
A commercial invoice is issued after the goods are placed on a carrier such as a ship.
A proforma invoice is sent to the importer after the importer agrees with the prices and conditions quoted in the price
quotation by the exporter.
Although a proforma invoice and a commercial invoice are important documents in import and export, they are
different in many ways.
Proforma invoice and commercial invoice have different functions in the import and export operation.
The importer uses the proforma invoice to apply for an L/C if the payment method is agreed on.
The exporter collects all documents stated in the L/C including a commercial invoice to get money from the bank as
payment for the goods sent to the importer.

Every condition is fine for me except only one thing.
What's that?
It's about the discount. You quoted a 20% discount for me. But for that big volume of goods, I think you should have offered me
a higher discount.
Um....m. But for the high quality rattan furniture as you have seen from the trade exhibition you visited, your customers in Hong
Kong should be willing to pay for it.
Yes, about the quality, I have no objection. But in Hong Kong today, there's a lot of competition. Some people are still looking
for premium quality goods, but they're more price conscious.
Um.....m. How about giving me some time? I'll call you later today about this matter. I have to talk to my colleagues who take
care of costs and production.
That's O.K.
Will you be in the office all day? Should I have your mobile phone number just in case?
All right. My mobile phone number is .... .

Sometimes countries want to make
sure that there is no falsification in declaring
the value of the goods in order to avoid
paying the full amount of import duty. In this
case, a consular invoice may be required. A
consular invoice is an invoice signed by the
consul of the importing country stationed in
the exporting country.
All of the details similar to those
identified on the commercial invoice are
included in the consular invoice, as well as
the country of origin of the goods.
