500 - A Throwing and Catching Game

500 - A Throwing and Catching Game
Submitted by: Jackie Parker
Objective:
A fun game that helps develop throwing and catching skills, while having high
participation and high energy expenditures.
Equipment needed:
I like to use any of the following balls. Each time we use a different ball, it’s a
whole new game!
Kick balls, tennis balls, footballs, soft fluffy balls, foam balls, Nylon Balls, 500 balls
Helpful hint:
This works best outside.
Try to place the more aggressive students together into one group.
Rules:
If you catch a fly ball, it’s 100 points. If you get the ball while it’s on the ground,
you get 50 points. Keep your own score. Once you get to 500 it’s your turn to be
the thrower. Throwers must stand behind a certain line to throw.
To begin game:
Put students into groups of 4. One person kneels down. To begin, the person
kneeling down will go and get one ball. The other three students will go out in
the field. The thrower must throw HIGH flies. Overhand throwing is preferred.
(Unless using a Frisbee.)
I like this game because it uses their math skills.
Variation:
For K-2, I say you get one point for every ball you pick up from the ground and
TWO points if you catch the ball in the air. The first one to 5 points gets to be the
new thrower.
