Addition and Subtraction
+(+x) = +x , move x steps to the right
+(–x) = –x , move x steps to the left
– (+x) = –x , move x steps to the left
– (–x) = +x , move x steps to the right
Example 4 + (+2) = 4 + 2,
5 + (–3) = 5 – 3,
8 – (+4) = 8 – 4,
(-9) – (–10 ) = (-9) + 10
The difference between two integers is the number of steps required to move from
second integer to reach the first integer on number line. And consider the difference of
(1) 8 – (+4) = 8 – 4 , start from 8 then move 4 steps to the left.
(2) (-9) – (–10 ) = (-9) + 10 , start from -9 then move 10 steps to the right

7. Procedure
Period 1
1. Introduction
The teacher represents this following sentence on the white board
+(+x) = +x , positive with positive x = positive x, move x steps to the right
+(–x) = –x , positive with negative x = negative x, move x steps to the left
– (+x) = –x , negative with positive x = negative x, move x steps to the left
– (–x) = +x , negative with negative x = positive x, move x steps to the right
Example 4 + (+2) = 4 + 2, start from 4 then move 2 steps to right
5 + (–3) = 5 – 3, start from 5 then move 3 steps to left
8 – (+4) = 8 – 4, start from 8 then move 4 steps to left
(-9) – (–10 ) = (-9) + 10, start from -9 then move 10 steps to right
2. Lesson Procedure
1) The teacher represents 2-3 sentence on the whiteboard and ask students to consider
its move to the left or move to the right. Then ask students to represent the solution by
using a number line.
(1) 10 – (+12) = 10 – 12 = -2
Solution start from 10 then move 12 steps to the left
-12
(2) (-8) – (–15) = (-8) + 15 = 7
Solution: start from -8 then move 15 steps to right
+12
25
2) Divide students in group of 3-4 people and each group do exercises 4 ((a), (b), (c)) on
page 17 of E-Mastery PLUS Mathayom 1. Then let one person in each group to present.
All students and teacher discuss and exchange ideas.
Example (-3) – (-4)
Solution (-3) – (-4) = (-3) + 4 = 1
+4
3. Conclusion
1) Students and teacher share conclusions about the lesson: that is
+(+x) = +x , move x steps to the right
+(–x) = –x , move x steps to the left
– (+x) = –x , move x steps to the left
– (–x) = +x , move x steps to the right
2) Homework : Students answer exercise 6 in E-Mastery PLUS Mathayom 1, page 18
Period 2
1. Introduction
1) Ask students, what we learned at the end of the previous lesson.
Answer : Subtract an integers to a positive integer and negative integer
2. Lesson Procedure
1) The teacher represents 2-3 sentences on the whiteboard then ask student to solve it
and show the solution by using a number line.
Example (1) Evaluate (-2) – (-5) – 8
Solution (-2) – (-5) – 8 = (-2) + 5 – 8 = 3 – 8 = -5 , start from -2 then move 5
steps to the right and then move 8 steps to the left.
26
-8
+5
Example (2) Evaluate 9 – 18 – (-5)
Solution 8 – 18 – (-5) = 8 – 18 + 5 = (-10) + 5 = -5 , start from 8 then move
18 steps to the left and then move 5 steps to the right.
+5
-18
2) Divide students in group of 3-4 people. Each group do exercises 4 ((d), (e), (f)) on

then dropped by 5o C in the afternoon. At night, its temperature dropped
by 2 o C . Find the temperature of the city at night.
2) Ask students to solve the problem, all student share discussion of solution.

(1) the temperature dropped by 5o C
(2) the temperature dropped by 2 o C
Student : (1) -5
(2) -2
Teacher : Can anyone write the sentence to solve the equation?
Student : (-3) – 5 – 2
Teacher : Can anyone calculate the different of (-3) – 5 – 2 by using a
number line?
Student :
-2
-5
(-3) – 5 – 2 = (-8) – 2 = 10, start from -3 then move 5 steps to the left and then
move 2 steps to the left.
