Project 1: Application of Statistical Element Selection (SES) to 3D Heterogeneously Integrated
AlN-MEMS/CMOS Filters for Performance Improvement and Yield Enhancement
Carnegie Mellon University

Pittsburgh, PA
Sep. 2013 - Present
Designed, laid out and characterized AlN MEMS and 28 nm and 65 nm CMOS chips and cooperated with several
different companies (i.e. MOSIS, TLMI Corp, and the Institute of Microelectronics (IME), Singapore) to achieve
successful 3D hybrid integration of AlN MEMS resonators and filters with CMOS circuits.
Collaborated with process engineers at IME, and faculty and graduate students at CMU to help develop IME’s AlN
MEMS platform on an 8" silicon wafer, involving thin-film encapsulation of resonators and re-distribution layers
(RDL) for signal routing.
Participated in weekly teleconferences for general program, project and timeline updates, and bi-weekly
teleconferences for the development of AlN MEMS platform.
Ran post-layout parasitics simulations for layout traces on CMOS chip to optimize signal routing.
Analyzed the use of re-distribution layers on MEMS chip for signal routing in order to minimize effects of parasitics
on the system level performance. Modelled DC and RF behaviors of these RD layers based on experimental data taken
on mindfully designed sets of test structures.
Performed accelerated reliability tests on thin-film encapsulated and hermetically sealed AlN resonators by using them
as resonant components in oscillators. Monitored the performance of this circuit under harsh environmental conditions
over time to determine the life span of this hermetically sealed encapsulation.
Explored and analyzed various types of filter configurations to make narrow-band channel select filters using AlN
MEMS Contour-Mode Resonators (CMRs).
Designed AlN CMRs using COMSOL multi-physics, and made analysis of Q, electromechanical coupling coefficient
(𝑘𝑘𝑡𝑡2 ) and spurious modes based on resonator geometry and experimental data in order to utilize the full potential of
these resonators in filter synthesis.

Created CMOS switches and shift registers to finely correct and tune the frequency response of the AlN MEMS filters
by means of Statistical Element Selection (SES) algorithm.
Prepared a test set-up for 3D integrated chip stack, which includes but is not limited to, ordering a custom mixed signal
(RF and Digital Logic and Power) probe and related connectors, implementing several different Labview schemes for
generating proper signals for experiments, writing MATLAB functions for application of SES algorithm and SOLR
calibration (using only short, open and load fixtures) of acquired s-parameter data.
Programmed PCELLs for generating automatic resonator layout to put on mask and created a DRC file involving the
design constraints of developed AlN MEMS platform to mitigate the risks of process failure due to layout.
Contributed to many presentations and reports on the progress of research and development.
Project 2: Programmable Filter Arrays
Carnegie Mellon University
•
•
•
•
•
Pittsburgh, PA
Aug 2016 - Present
Designed an array of narrow-band filters at different frequencies to demonstrate multi-channel select filters operating
on a single chip with a single matching circuit.
Analyzed various methods of frequency shift mechanisms in AlN CMRs to effectively and properly provide the
required frequency separation between different filter branches.
Prepared a test set-up on PCB with off-shelf components, and made the interconnections between MEMS chip and
PCB via wire-bonding.
Project 3: DC-DC Power Converters using AlN MEMS resonators as Transformers
Carnegie Mellon University
•
FEB 8, 2017
Curriculum Vitae
Pittsburgh, PA
Aug 2016 - Present
Derived analytical equations and expressions to understand the behavior of DC-AC, AC-DC, and DC-DC conversions
of power converters by using AlN CMRs as transformers.
Made the model of AlN CMRs in ADS, and ran the corresponding circuit simulations with the selected off-chip
components for power converter circuit. Compared the results with analytically derived ones, and designed and sized
the resonators to optimize the efficiency of power conversion.
Currently preparing the test setup on PCB, and planning to perform the experimental tests for system level
demonstration on hardware.
