Gabriel was the recipient of the Rust Opportunity Scholarship and the 'Friends of the School of Adult & General Education Award' at the 2009 GED Graduation ceremonies. CNM offers certificate and degree programs in over 100 areas. In these challenging economic times, CNM’s role in the community is more important than ever. CNM contributes to a strong workforce through state-of-the-art training and education which paves the road to economic success for generations to come. 2 0 0 9 c n m f o u n d at i o n annual report For some students, CNM provides the cornerstone of their careers— training for highdemand careers utilizing emerging technologies. For others, a CNM education offers an avenue out of poverty, an opportunity to break free of the vicious and exhausting cycle of working more than one low-paying job to support a family. Helping students access education regardless of economic barriers is the purpose for which the CNM Foundation was built. The value of CNM’s education and training opportunities has resulted in record enrollment in 2009. CNM’s increase in student enrollment for college-credit courses over the past two years was 22%, higher than the national average. In fact, for the first time in the College’s history, student enrollment surpassed that of UNM, making CNM the largest institution of higher education in the state. An article in The Albuquerque Journal (October 15, 2009), explains that CNM’s growth has outpaced other New Mexico colleges and universities because “CNM's role of training students for jobs in a short time is particularly attractive.” CNM continues to provide the opportunities for education and vocational training that are essential for the success of our students and our community. Highlights include: ■■In 2009, CNM enrolled 33% of New Mexico’s community college students and a full 43% of the state’s two-year college students. ■■CNM continued to break enrollment records, with 27,934 students enrolled for Fall 2009. ■■Adults with associate’s degrees earn 29% more than those with a high school diploma. ■■Adults with a four-year degree earn a full 83% more than high school graduates. ■■More than 90% of CNM students find jobs in their field of study upon graduation. ■■60% of CNM students are “first generation” college students. ■■CNM’s GED class is the largest graduating class in New Mexico. With the increase in student enrollment and the apparent need for fundraising support to assist this growth, the CNM Foundation was successful in providing $373,406 in scholarships, the largest amount distributed in Foundation history. This giving proved critical to the success of our students. The following pages highlight just some of the ways our local community is committed to helping our students achieve their dream of an education. L i s a Mc C u ll o c h was recently appointed to the position of Executive Director of the CNM Foundation after serving for two years as the Foundation’s Director of Development. Lisa’s vision for the CNM Foundation is to secure more opportunity for student success, to forge robust community partnerships, and to position CNM as a national and local leader in education and economic development. “My role is really to guide the Foundation in determining what support the College needs to remain vibrant, viable, and serving the needs of the community… We’ve raised more money than ever before this past year and I aspire to provide even greater support to the College in the future.” Dear CNM Foundation Supporters, First, I want to thank all of you for being such amazing supporters of CNM, the CNM Foundation and, most importantly, CNM students.Your tremendous generosity, in the name of education, breathes so much life into the hopes of our students. Your acts of generosity and goodwill have a multiplying effect in our community. When one student receives the help they need to stay in school, that can be a defining turning point for their entire family. Every time one student succeeds, earns a degree or certificate and improves the quality of their life with a rewarding career, their success and appreciation of education inspires those around them. Each success story at CNM adds welcomed strength to the fabric of our community. Each success story also adds strength to our local economy by increasing the quality of the workforce for existing and future employers in the region. As a supporter of the Foundation, you are paving the way for more success stories, a better community and a more vibrant economy. You have also helped us strengthen our partnerships with local organizations and community leaders. CNM believes strongly in the power of partnerships. And in these difficult economic times, productive partnerships take on even greater importance. I know our students aren’t the only ones struggling because of the economic downturn. Few people around the country have been spared from encountering some type of financial loss. That is why your continued support of the Foundation is so inspiring and appreciated. At CNM, we’re also appreciative of the leadership that CNM Foundation Executive Director Lisa McCulloch has provided since being promoted to the position in July 2009. Under her leadership, we’re confident that the CNM Foundation will continue to prosper. On behalf of CNM, I want to express our tremendous appreciation for the CNM Foundation and all of the admirable donors who enrich our community by choosing to support the success of CNM students. Thank you for helping us to advance CNM’s Vision of “Changing Lives, Building Community.” Sincerely, Dr. Kathie W. Changing Lives Building Community Many of our students at CNM are financially vulnerable in the best of economic times. During these extraordinarily difficult economic times, their ability to stay in school and pursue their educational and career goals becomes even more fragile. Thanks to you, many of these at-risk students find the temporary support they desperately need through the CNM Foundation. Dear CNM Foundation Supporters, As we enter a new year—and a new decade—it is a natural time to reflect on the challenges faced and accomplishments achieved over the last year. As a Foundation, and as a college, we have worked tirelessly to continue to provide opportunities and serve as a beacon of hope for our students and also to support critical economic development initiatives in our community. 2 0 0 9 c n m f o u n d at i o n annual report The recession has certainly increased the financial challenges our students face. During times of economic disruption and dislocation, higher education and vocational training are more important avenues for an increasing number of our community members. Investing in one’s education and improving skills helps people to secure their long-term financial stability and self-sufficiency. CNM, the CNM Foundation, and our local community recognize the fragile situation our students are facing and have mounted an unprecedented response. I’m happy to report that our efforts are working. Enrollment at CNM is at an all-time high. And, despite the economic climate, the CNM Foundation raised a record amount of financial support this past fiscal year as our community pulled together to make a marked impact on the lives of CNM students. We established new relationships with local businesses and community leaders while strengthening long-standing partnerships within our community. In this report, we are proud to highlight these community advocates who help ensure that CNM can continue to provide the assistance students need to succeed and strengthen the fabric of our community. In addition, 2009 marked a year for transition for the CNM Foundation with the selection of Lisa McCulloch as our new Executive Director. With her proven track record of fundraising success as the Director of Development and a strong commitment to education, Lisa will now lead the CNM Foundation to new heights. Her outstanding talent, passion, and experience are an asset to the Foundation, CNM, and most importantly, our students, who are the beneficiaries of our collective efforts. In a recent Time Magazine article entitled Can Community Colleges Save the U.S. Economy, it was noted that the Center for American Progress concluded in a February 2009 report, “America’s future economic success may well depend on how we invest in two-year institutions.” We wholeheartedly agree and invite you to read about the powerful local partnerships, programs, and success stories highlighted in the following pages. You are our CNM community—and together, we will continue to help students succeed, and our community prosper, with innovation, dedication, and purpose. F u n d i n g Pa r t n e r s C o ll a b o r at e Loca l Funding Partn ers Collaborat e to Supp ort CNM and Ne w Mexico NewMexicoResources.org The website NewMexicoResources.org provides users with comprehensive information on benefits and assistance programs for those in need, both for CNM students and the general public. The site was established by CNM four years ago based on a template donated by Community Resources, Inc. and funded by local partners, PNM, Wells Fargo, and Don Chalmers Ford. NewMexicoResources.org provides practical information on a wide array of federal, state, and local benefit programs. This includes cash assistance, energy assistance, food programs, healthcare programs, housing and homeless programs, legal assistance, tax credits, childcare and preschool information, employment and job training, resources for non-citizens, senior services, transportation, and youth programs. 2 0 0 9 c n m f o u n d at i o n annual report The website offers information about how to apply for benefits, eligibility requirements, benefit amounts, and answers to commonly asked questions. In current economic times, when people need to learn about social support opportunities more than ever, finding up-to-date assistance information is crucial. This year saw a considerable expansion of NewMexicoResources. org. To keep up with the changing landscape of available benefits, content areas such as housing and homelessness, childcare and preschools, unemployment insurance, and transportation services received significant updates and expansion. Website usage has expanded as well, with the number of visitors more than doubling in the last two years. Currently, the two most frequently visited pages are “Food Stamps: An Overview” and “TANF: What Benefits Will I Get?” with the most recent data showing an average of 450 views per month for each. At CNM, access to these types of benefits can mean that a student will be able to enter or remain in school. It means that a student who was unable to find affordable childcare can now learn about available programs. It means that full-time students have help getting meals on the family table. Short-term public benefits help students complete their education; completing their education helps student ensure long-term economic security and self-sufficiency. NewMexicoResources.org was established and funded by local business people who care about education and the welfare our community. This collaborative was founded to ensure that students have the temporary support they need to realize their dreams, finish their education, and change their lives. Further, the website serves as a valuable part of the “toolkit” used by CNM achievement coaches, providers of services, and others working to link those in need with available resources. Gorham, Jr. and Marie K. Gorham Charitable Foundation is a family foundation with deep roots in New Mexico. In 2009, the Gorham Foundation committed $300,000 to launch CNM’s dual-credit, distance learning financial literacy initiative. Through this initiative, CNM will be able to bring personal financial education in the form of college credit curriculum to high schools across the state. The initiative helps public schools meet the new legislative mandates requiring all New Mexico high schools to offer financial literacy electives and requiring that students to pass at least one advanced placement, dual credit, or distance learning course in order to graduate. A 2007 survey by Charles Schwab found that nearly 75% of teens expected to earn well over $100,000 a year, yet only 34% could balance a checkbook and only 26% understood how credit card fees work. Changing Lives Building Community In light of this, CNM designed a distance learning initiative that helps students chart their educational and career goals, as well as financial matters in order to prepare them to manage household finances and avoid future debt problems. Students learn about the perils of predatory lending and the technicalities of credit card debt. A hopeful outcome for this initiative will be to help them make informed choices well into their futures. The program is called ‘Making Money Work’, and in its pilot year enrolled 300 students from school districts all across New Mexico. A visionary anchor contribution from the Gorham Family Foundation and a $100,000 matching grant from New Mexico Educators Federal Credit Union will increase statewide rollout in 2010. This rollout will take place over three years, expanding statewide into all 89 school districts by 2012. CNM is the only community college in New Mexico implementing an online financial literacy curriculum for which high school students can receive course credit. The initiative fulfills the new state mandates, and helps pave the way for high school students to pursue higher education—with no financial impact to the school districts. Lauren is a 17-year old high school student from Albuquerque. She is currently in the foster care system and will be turning 18 soon. Here is what she had to say about the course. “I don’t have people in my life to show me about finances, taxes and budgeting. This class will help me in the future because now I won’t turn 18 and have adult responsibilities without knowing anything. I’m really proud because now I know about budgeting and know how to talk about financial things and budget for myself. Learning life skills, like the ones you learn in this class, is very important and I think anyone can benefit from it. One of our first assignments was to research careers and I would like to go to college and become a social worker to work with at-risk youth. This class helped me to arrange my thoughts and answer questions completely like I will when I go to college and my facilitators really helped me to understand the assignments.” " T h e F r a n k D. In August 2007, NMEFCU generously awarded $605,740 to CNM to install a standardized, centrally administered campus-wide Internet access service (“The Wireless Network”) at CNM campuses in Albuquerque. This past year marked the completion of the wireless project, and ushered in a new era of connectivity for the CNM community. This wireless technology helps to improve student, staff, and faculty access to administrative and academic resources. Students are now able to access all network services, including connecting to CNM Passport (passport.cnm.edu) where students can access their CNM web based email, view campus-wide announcements, and review their financial records, course schedules, and grades. 2 0 0 9 c n m f o u n d at i o n annual report This expanded access also enhances the productivity and job satisfaction of CNM’s faculty and staff. Our employees are able to access the wireless network to continue working on projects between meetings or classes without returning to their office. They can send course-related email to a student while in the classroom or post assignments immediately following their lectures. New Mexico Educators Federal Credit Union’s commitment to CNM didn’t stop there. In 2009, it continued with a $100,000 match to the Gorham Foundation’s support of CNM’s dual-credit financial literacy initiative (profiled on the previous page) through its members’ Community Rewards program because of the impact this program has on the community and in the long run, the economy. NMEFCU’s dedication to the community has not gone unnoticed. In fact, they were recognized in 2006 as “Outstanding Individuals in Philanthropy” by the Association of Fundraising Professionals. The purpose of the Rust Opportunity Scholarship Fund is to provide emergency assistance to students who are experiencing an unforeseen financial situation that is beyond their control and threatens to disrupt their education. For those living on the edge of financial security, surprises like an emergency medical bill, a delayed paycheck, or a higher-than-expected utility bill can derail even the bestintentioned student. Donna and Jack Rust with scholarship recipient Gabriel Guevara at the 2009 Donor Appreciation Dinner. This scholarship helps students pay for essential services, such as rent, utilities, food, textbooks, transportation, and childcare. In the 2008-2009 school year, the majority of applications were for housing expenses, followed by utility bills and school-related expenses such as textbooks and school supplies. Applications are reviewed continually and approved funds are available within 48 hours. Most importantly, the Rust Opportunity Scholarship Fund works. In the 2008-2009 academic year, the term-to-term retention rate for students who received assistance from the Fund was 85.3%. This is a remarkable number compared to 67.7% retention rate for first-time CNM students. The proven retention of our students due to this scholarship has attracted more than 300 additional individual donors to make contributions to this scholarship in order to ensure its continuation. Valerie Otero’s story is a telling example of how the Rust Opportunity Scholarship Fund helps students meet immediate needs while also putting them on a path to academic and financial success: Valerie Otero When Valerie’s child support payments lapsed, her world threatened to crumble. She couldn’t pay her mortgage, utility bills, or provide for her children—and she certainly couldn’t afford to stay enrolled in school. The Rust Opportunity Assistance Fund paid her mortgage for one month until her child support payments started up again. Without the help, Valerie would have left school. She explains, “My next step, if I didn’t receive this money, was to drop out of college and get a full-time job. I probably wouldn’t have come back to college either, because I would have not felt secure in going to school and being able to also make my mortgage payments. This program is an absolute godsend.” Students who receive emergency assistance from the Rust Opportunity Scholarship Fund get more than a one-time helping hand. CNM provides participants with access to other services, information, and assistance to help students avoid similar financial crises in the future. In Valerie’s case, she learned about a work-study program. She joined the program and is now able to supplement her income and prevent similar financial emergencies in the future. Valerie is well on her way to achieving her dreams of finishing school and making a better life for herself and her family. “The Rust Opportunity Scholarship has been an inspir ing success at CNM and it has inspired other colleges around the countr y to create similar scholarships, I am thr illed that this scholarship has been f u n d e d i n p e r p e t u i t y. This means that many more students will b e a b l e t o ove r c o m e unexpected financial hardships that might otherwise force t h e m t o g i ve u p o n their education. This scholar ship is of g reat value to our students and our college, especially in these u n u s u a l e c o n o m i c t i m e s .” Dr. Kathie W. Changing Lives Building Community The Rust Opportunity Scholarship has proven extremely successful since its launch in 2005, receiving national recognition by Inside Higher Ed as an innovative and effective program. In the past four years, more than 1,500 students have received aid from this scholarship, with awards averaging around $300. This year, the CNM Foundation was fortunate to receive a most generous gift of $250,000 from the Rusts to continue this good work. Distinguished Alumni Award 2 0 0 9 c n m f o u n d at i o n annual report Tony Trujillo In August the CNM Alumni Association presented Tony Trujillo, President of Holman’s Surveying Precision and Computing Solutions, with the 2009 Distinguished Alumni Award which recognizes a CNM alumnus who has attained distinction personally and professionally and reflects CNM's vision of changing lives and building community. Tony’s aspiration back in the 1960s was to become a civil engineering technician, but when he was offered a job to work at Holman’s Surveying Precision and Computing Solutions as a retail store sales clerk, he found that he enjoyed the technical atmosphere and interaction with customers. Tony soon realized that he needed to find a way to strengthen his workplace skills and prepare himself for a successful career. In 1965, Tony enrolled at CNM, then known as TVI, to take classes in Architectural and Mechanical Drafting and business administration. Tony was able to enhance his job skills at CNM through a high-quality education at a very affordable cost. Today Tony has more that forty-three years of business experience and successfully leads a high-tech, multi-million dollar business, but he still credits where he got the start for his education. “CNM has been my bridge to success.” Tony remains active in his community. He is involved in the Albuquerque Hispano Chamber of Commerce, the Mayor’s Small Business Advisory Council, APS Perkins Advisory Committee, and CNM Geographic Information Technologies Advisory Committee. His humble beginnings and success within Holman’s Inc. are fitting for this distinguished award and serve as an inspiration to our CNM students. I remember when I started at TVI. Since I was good in math, I decided to take a class in accounting but it wasn’t for me. The next semester I enrolled in a drafting class. Today, I run a great company, Holman’s, Inc., in business for 55 years with 55 knowledgeable employees and located in five states. We sell and support precision surveying and computing products from HP, Apple, and Topcon Positioning Systems. We have the best customers: Sandia National Labs, LANL, professional surveyors, engineers, contractors and mappers and more. CNM has been my bridge to success. I would like to see more high school students take advantage of CNM's career and technical programs. The 50% high school drop out rate is unacceptable and we need more students to connect with CNM. Special thanks to the CNM Governing Board and President Winograd for your support of the small business community. Small businesses are the driving economic workforce engine of our community and we need CNM to build our future workforce. I am honored and humbled by this award. Good things take time! Thank you!
