The CNM Foundation works
to provide the extra financial
assistance necessary for the citizens
of CNM’s service area to obtain the
quality educational opportunities
they deserve. This support allows
the College to meet its mission of
promoting and providing higher
education, skill development and
workforce training relevant to
contemporary needs within the
district and the state.

T h e i m p o r t a nce o f e d u c a t i o n a l o p p o r t u n i t y for all is
more poignant than ever in light of the current economic recession. As
stated in the President’s first address to a joint session of Congress on
February 24, 2009:
“It is our responsibility as lawmakers and educators to make this system work. But it is the responsibility of every citizen to
participate in it. And so tonight, I ask every American to commit to at least one year or more of higher education or career
training. This can be community college or a four-year school; vocational training or an apprenticeship. But whatever the
training may be, every American will need to get more than a high school diploma. And dropping out of high school is no longer
an option. It's not just quitting on yourself, it's quitting on your country – and this country needs and values the talents of
every American. That is why we will provide the support necessary for you to complete college and meet a new goal: by 2020,
America will once again have
the highest proportion of college
graduates in the world.”
Higher education is inextricably linked to economic and social
success. CNM plays a significant role in the economic wellbeing of
central New Mexico.
■■ Children of college graduates are 50% more likely to attend college
themselves, providing advantages to future generations.
■■ Over the last five years, an average of 96% of CNM graduates have
gained employment in their fields of study within 45 days to one
year of graduation.
■■ Taxpayers see a real money “book” return of 13% on their annual
investments in CNM and recover all investments in 10 years in
the form of increased state and local tax receipts, as well as social
savings, such as reductions in incarceration, welfare, health care
support and others.
■■ The CNM service area economy owes roughly $899.3 million of its
regional income to CNM operations and past student productivity
effects. This figure amounts to roughly 4% of a typical year’s
economic growth.
C NM Fou n dation Annu al R Ep o rt 20 0 8
■■ CNM graduates find employment or continue education at a
higher rate than graduates in the state’s peer institutions. This rate
has held constant, ranging from 84% - 85%, for the past four years.

changing lives building community
T h e C N M F o u n d a t i o n is committed to providing support that helps the College continue to be a major
economic force for central New Mexico and plays an essential role in the strategic direction of
CNM. By drawing private financial support, the CNM Foundation builds relationships between
the College and the community. Even more important than our critical functions of operations
and fundraising, are the human factors of established relationships, mutual benefits, appropriate
recognition and advancement of CNM’s perceived role within the community. In championing
the importance of a skilled workforce – from both an individual and collective standpoint – and
the power of leveraging resources to create change, the CNM Foundation offers the promise of
opportunity that higher education holds.
In the following pages, you will find out about ways that the CNM Foundation is helping the
College to advance economic opportunity in our region. These are but a few real-world examples of
how our Foundation and supporters help CNM to reach more students and assist in their success.

In these difficult economic times, it’s reassuring to know that CNM and our students have
supporters like you. Your appreciation for the power of education and your passion for helping
students tap into that power are treasured resources in our efforts to change more lives for the
better and build a stronger community in central New Mexico.
CNM is currently facing a new challenge of serving more students with fewer state funds.
And many of our students are striving to overcome economic obstacles that jeopardize their efforts
to improve their lives through education. As always, I’m thrilled and extremely grateful that we
have the CNM Foundation and its donors providing such tremendous support to worthy students
who are committed to educational success.
Your efforts and your generosity directly support CNM’s goals of increasing student success
and making higher education accessible and affordable for everyone.
It has been a challenging year for many of our students. I also know that the past year has
been challenging for the remarkable people who donate to great causes nationwide. Few people
have been insulated completely from the troubling economic conditions. That is why your
continued support of the CNM Foundation and our College is inspiring and highly commendable.
Together, we are lifting more people up, empowering them with education and preparing them to
succeed in the workplace and in life.
On behalf of CNM, I want to express my great appreciation for the CNM Foundation and
all of the wonderful donors who bring so many dreams to life through education and generosity.
Together, we’ll continue to expand our vision of “Changing Lives, Building Community.”
Sincerely,

As more and more people are learning about the high-quality educational opportunities
available at CNM, we expect our enrollment to continue to grow in the coming years. As
enrollment grows, so does CNM’s ability to positively affect the lives of students, their families and
in turn, our communities.

a L E TT E R F R O M BOA R D P R E SID E N T , GL E N N W E R TH E I M
I extend a warm welcome to all of you who have joined the Central New Mexico Community College Foundation
in “Changing Lives, Building Community” in 2008.
Fiscal Year 2007-2008 marked a banner year for the Foundation and our region’s flagship community college,
CNM. Visionary leadership by our distinguished Board and passionate and dedicated staff has led to an unprecedented
investment of more than $1 million from national foundation, corporate and community funding. This depth of support
helps our students achieve the economic and social stability required to be successful in their academic, technical and
vocational pursuits. Our students are committed to bettering their future – and supporters like you make it possible
for them to enroll in school, stay on track and move toward graduating and becoming important contributors to our
economy.
Perhaps at no time in recent memory has the need for accessible and affordable education and workforce training
been more important than it is right now. As our world faces economic challenges, our students must make decisions
to improve themselves to face a challenging employment environment. The kind of flexible and responsive education
provided at CNM is one of the most productive and certain steps individuals can take to secure their future.
changing lives
The Foundation believes in providing innovative financial support to those who take the initiative to work and
learn and improve themselves through education. And we work daily to help CNM sustain and enhance the educational
opportunities for which the college is nationally recognized. This past year, the Foundation has solicited significant
assistance from national foundations to provide support for the college. National philanthropic partnerships have been
forged and nurtured on behalf of New Mexico’s students, giving them access to more financial resources. This success is
due to the Foundation’s commitment to supporting students holistically. Foundation supporters, both national and local,
understand the variety of obstacles that our students face: financial literacy, cultural barriers and unforeseen financial
obstacles in the midst of a changing economy. Financial commitments to the CNM Foundation help ensure that any
student who wishes to pursue an education at CNM is able to do so.
building community
The students at CNM would be left with a daunting void if it weren’t for the commitment of people like you –
the CNM Foundation’s contributors, supporters and friends. On behalf of the CNM Foundation Board, I deeply
appreciate your support of our students and the economic welfare of New Mexico. Your financial support makes a
measureable difference in our community, at CNM in general, but most importantly to individual students striving for a
better tomorrow.
Sincerely,
Glenn Wertheim, CNM Foundation Board President

CNM’s Center for Working Families is now a model program for community
colleges that are seeking solutions to situations that have traditionally forced students to
drop out of school. The Center identifies and breaks down barriers to family economic
success by bundling income and work supports, financial services and asset-building
devices with academic support services. Centers for Working Families are a strategy
developed by the Annie E. Casey Foundation, prototyped by the AECF at the community
college level successfully at CNM, and nationally through community agencies.

8
Our Center for Working Families began in January 2005 with funding from
the Annie E. Casey Foundation as the only program of its type in a community
college setting. The pilot program ended in 2008 with recognition as the most effective
Center for Working Families in the nation. In its inaugural year, the program served 55
students – and in 2008 more than 600 students enrolled in the program. The delivery
capacity of the Center for Working Families at the community college level proved to
be a replicable model for helping students and families succeed. CNM recently hosted
six other community colleges from around the nation interested in launching similar
programs in their own college setting.
Recognizing the outstanding success of CNM’s Center for Working Families, Citi
granted the first local corporate contribution to this CNM program in the amount of
$25,000. This is a sound investment on the part of the Albuquerque business community
to help train individuals to manage their money and plan for their futures, all of which
plays a role in their academic success and the community’s economic recovery. This
exciting program will allow the CNM Foundation to present a financial coaching model
to other Centers for Working Families across the country and make a huge impact on
families nationally.

DONNA and JACK RUST OPPORTUNITY SCHOLARSHIP / THE LUMINA FOUNDATION
The outstanding support by local philanthropists through the CNM Foundation has enabled the
College to leverage funding nationally. In 2005, Jack and Donna Rust generously donated $250,000
to establish an emergency fund, called the Donna and Jack Rust Opportunity Scholarship. This fund
helps students overcome unforeseen financial difficulties that could prevent them from completing their
education. The Rust Opportunity Scholarships keep students in school by allowing them to focus on their
studies, rather than worrying about an unexpected financial hardship. This significant gift from the Rusts
enabled the CNM Foundation to attract national funding partners like the Lumina Foundation in Indiana.
The Lumina Foundation coordinates Dreamkeepers, an emergency scholarship program that helps
community college students who are at risk of dropping out because of unexpected financial crises. A
challenge grant was awarded in light of the Rusts’ generous donation. As the Dreamkeepers pilot project
came to a close in 2008, CNM was recognized among the participating community colleges as the school
that: raised the most additional emergency scholarship funding, distributed the most funds to students and
had one of the highest retention rates among Dreamkeepers participants, at 89%. “The Rust Opportunity
Scholarship has proven to be a valuable tool to assist students who are struggling and considering dropping
out. I rely on this funding to help students with unexpected situations; when they’ve suddenly found
themselves in financial crises due to job loss, medical problems, or unanticipated child care issues. We have
been able to assist with all types of expenses including rent, utilities and food. The best part is that our
data shows that this assistance strongly affects our ability to retain students and help them graduate,” said
Fredreka Lucero, Scholarship Advisor in the CNM Financial Aid Office.
This success is largely due to the steps the CNM Foundation took to expand the impact that
emergency funding would provide for students. Through concentrated efforts, the CNM Foundation links
students who receive emergency support to the caring wraparound services provided by CNM’s Center for
Working Families (see the previous page for program details) and other support services that help sustain
the positive results of emergency assistance. The students are offered access to financial literacy classes and
one-on-one coaching and are linked with someone on campus who can be their champion.

American Indian Education Foundation / Bank of
Albuquerque
The CNM Foundation’s work is guided by the philosophy that
education is the pathway out of poverty. In order to bring light to this
pathway, the root obstacles to educational access must be identified and
shattered. Focusing on access and opportunity, many of the Foundation’s
programs have assisted in enrolling and retaining minority and lowincome populations in adult education. In 2008, this approach was
recognized by the American Indian Education Foundation, a national
funding partner whose program offices are in South Dakota.
For many community college students, higher education is
intimidating and overwhelming. For many Native Americans, this time
of transition can be even more stressful because there is often a need for
financial assistance made worse by a sense of isolation. CNM enrolls more
than 1,600 Native American students, a number that has grown steadily in
the past decade, more than doubling between the 1996 - 1997 school-year
and the 2007 - 2008 term. One important recruitment and retention tool
is the financial assistance program from the American Indian Education
Foundation. In the fall of 2008, the Albuquerque Journal reported that
CNM’s minority enrollment increased by 9.4% as a result of this program.
Emergency funds from the American Indian Education Foundation
are provided to Native American students at CNM for things such as
testing and certification fees, childcare expenses, transportation costs,
healthcare expenses and daily living expenses – all of which are essential
to keeping students in school. Additionally, a challenge grant was issued,
matching funds with local partners to provide significant scholarship
support. As the first local corporate contributor to the program,
Jennifer Thomas, President of Bank of Albuquerque noted, “At Bank of
Albuquerque, our community is our livelihood and serving our community
is more than a commitment, it is our culture. For that reason, we believe
in giving back every day and in many different ways. We are pleased
to support key initiatives that not only benefit the social and economic
welfare of our community, but that also leverage even more support, such
as the AIEF program that provides matching funds.”
The American Indian Education Foundation’s belief and investment
in CNM is a testament to the emphasis we place on educational
opportunity. With strong access and continuing support, more individuals
can realize their educational and career potential, fulfill their hopes and
dreams and serve as role models for their children, peers, community and
the generations to come.

Experiences shared by former students help current and

Lauri Lineweaver enrolled at CNM because it would
allow her to continue working while pursuing an education.
In 2002, Lauri graduated from CNM with her Associate’s
Degree in Nursing. She continued on with her education to
earn a Bachelor’s Degree and a Master’s Degree in Nursing
Education. Today, Lauri is an Education Resource Nurse
and Master Clinical Instructor for Presbyterian Healthcare
Services’ Nursing Education Program, as well as in the
Cardiac Critical Care Unit, where she holds national nursing
certifications in critical care and cardiac surgery.
Marshall Shore began taking college level courses
at CNM during his sophomore year in high school. He
graduated early with his GED, completed his Associate’s
Degree in the fall of 2007, and is now a full-time Technical
Writer for New Mexico Educators Federal Credit Union.
He is currently attending UNM to complete his Bachelor’s
Degree in Business Administration.
The CNM Alumni Association ignites a sense of
community for former students and highlights the overall
impact CNM has on the workforce and economy. Alumni
offer the College volunteer, instructional and financial
support, making it an invaluable resource for CNM and the

base to advance the growth of CNM, fostering alumni
relationships to support career success for all CNM graduates,

Ways to Give
Your gift to the CNM Foundation will support our work today and our mission in the
years to come. We invite you to consider some of the following giving opportunities. We
thank you for your generosity and your gift will be acknowledged for your tax records.
G i f t s o f C a s h
A gift of cash is the most common and easiest way to support the CNM Foundation. You
can make a gift of cash by sending a check to the address listed below, or if you are a CNM
employee, you can give through payroll deduction. Contact the CNM Foundation for
more details.
Make your check payable to the CNM Foundation, designated for the appropriate purpose
and mail to:
CNM Foundation • 525 Buena Vista SE, Albuquerque, NM 87106
C r e d i t C a r d c o n t r i b u t i o n s
You can also make a gift by credit card by calling the CNM Foundation at
(505) 224-4685.
M at c h i n g G i f t s
Many national and local corporations will match their employees' gifts to the CNM
Foundation dollar-for-dollar, doubling the power of your gift. Contact your employer for
details about your company or organization’s matching gift program.
A G i f t i n M e m o r y o r i n H o n o r
Honor someone special or recognize an important event or date with a memorial or
commemorative gift.
G i f t s o f S t o c k o r S e c u r i t i e s
Often a gift can be made with little more than a phone call to your stockbroker.
W i ll s a n d B e q u e s t s
Leave a legacy or bequest for the CNM Foundation in your will.
L i f e I n s u r a n c e
If you have a life insurance policy that you no longer need, consider using it to support
student success at CNM. Simply designate the CNM Foundation as the beneficiary of the
policy.
G i f t s o f E q u i p m e n t a n d M at e r i a l s
Equipment or materials in good condition can be used in the classroom or other program
support and is invaluable to the success of CNM.
If you have any questions about making a gift to the CNM Foundation, we will be pleased
to assist you. Please call us at (505) 224-4685.
