Language Placement Score 01: A student should be placed in the 101 level, having no previous experience, and does not need to take a placement exam to start that language. An undergraduate student with two or more years of high school study in Chinese, French, Italian, Russian or Spanish, who plan to continue their study of the same language, must take a placement exam to determine the appropriate level of college study. Exam scores remain valid for one year. A student with less than two years of high school study in a language will be placed in the 101-level course in his or her chosen language. If prior to college a student has taken another language other than the five listed above and plans to continue studying that language, please use the following guidelines: If a student has fewer than 2 years of study in that language he or she will be placed at the 101 level. If a student has 2 years of study in that language he or she will be placed at the 102 level. If a student has 3 or more years of study in that language he or she will be placed at the 280 level. If a student is starting a new language, he or she must complete 101 and 102 levels in that language (6 credits). A student who begins at the 102 level must complete 102 and 280 (6 credits). A student who begins at the 280 level is required to take only the 280 course in that language (3 credits). Please note: American Sign Language (ASL) may be used to fulfill the Core language requirement. 4. If a student is a native speaker of a language other than English and wishes to continue studying that language for his or her language requirement, he or she should speak with an advisor to determine the appropriate level of study. 5. Language Exemptions: • Students who have completed secondary schooling in a language other than English • Students who have taken the foreign language SAT II exam prior to enrollment and have a score of 550 or above • Students who have taken the Language and/or the Literature Advanced Placement Exam in a foreign language and scored 4 or 5 will receive 3 or 6 credits that satisfy the Core • Students who take the NYU 12 point Proficiency Exam and score 12 points receive 3 credits of language core credit
