K Pekin Entwine- Vineyard Energy Management

Keith Pekin
Wine Industry Association of WA / Perth Region NRM
• National, voluntary environmental certification scheme
• Based on the Freshcare Environmental code –
(Freshcare can be used by table grape producers)
• Separate Viticulture and Winery codes
• Facilitated by the WFA
Drivers
• Retailers:Tesco, Walmart, Coles, Metcash etc.
• Competing with our competitors: South Africa, NZ, California and now France & Chile
• Wineries: Contract conditions for suppliers
• Consumers
EntWine in WA
• 18 vineyard companies (27 separate vineyards) have achieved certification
• 17 vineyards are currently working towards certification
• 8 Wineries have achieved EntWine winery certification
Indicators for Viticulture code
• Tonnes of grapes produced (T) • Area under vine, excluding headlands (Ha) • Electricity use in kilowatt hours (kWh) • Total water use in mega litres (ML) • Total nitrogen applied in kilograms (kg) • Total unleaded petrol use in litres (L) • Total diesel (excluding biodiesel) use in litres (L) • Total LPG use in litres (L) Vineyard energy use & GHGs • Nitrogen fertilisers
• Bore / Irrigation pumps
• Tractors and other vehicles
• Office equipment
• Methane from winery wastewater Drivers to reduce energy use
• Savings to the business owner (50% increase in energy costs in the last two years) • Meeting customer requirements (EntWine certification)
• Negate the need for expensive energy supply upgrades
• Social / Environmental considerations (global warming)
Barriers
• Upfront costs of purchasing and installing new energy efficient products
• Lack of confidence in product energy efficiency claims ‐ hard to find independent advice
• Hard to find energy efficient products in regional centres Options to save money on energy
• Use “time of use” or R3 tariff and irrigate during off‐peak hours. Off –
Peak = $0.09c kWh / Peak = $0.30 kWh. • Install variable speed drives to pumps
• Use soil moisture monitoring equipment to better manage irrigation
• If appropriate fertilisers can be applied more efficiently by fertigation (if drip irrigated)
Solar options
Example:14 kl /day @ 10m head for $6,750 (Can add generator for backup)
