EntWine Australia EntWine Australia • Wine industry’s voluntary environmental assurance scheme • Developed by WFA in response to pressure from: • markets, • competitors, and • Australian wine industry members. • Provides formal recognition of environmental best practice. EntWine Australia membership requirements • Certification under a recognised, independently audited environmental certification program audited at least every three years • Annual reporting to WFA against the EntWine Australia Indicators • Annual reporting to WFA of scope 1 and 2 carbon footprint using the Australian Wine Carbon Calculator or NGERS calculator (winery requirement only) • Payment of membership fee Environmental Certification Programs • WFA has customised and endorsed an existing environmental certification program - Freshcare Environmental. • Other schemes that are deemed equivalent will be recognised. EntWine pilot in the Margaret River wine region Delivered by Winewatch and funded by the federal government’s Caring for our Country. Objectives of the pilot: • to evaluate the draft Freshcare Codes and EntWine program and provide feedback to WFA. • to provide encouragement and support to companies in the MR wine region to achieve certification. Progress to date • 16 vineyards, 2 vineyard management companies and 10 wineries have completed Freshcare Environmental training • Draft Freshcare Environmental Codes were reviewed at the training and feedback provided to WFA. Codes have now been finalised. • One-on-one visits currently being undertaken Feedback on Freshcare Environmental • Generally a positive response. • Currently doing most of what’s required within the accepted good agricultural and winery practice sections of the Codes. • More paperwork, however it was considered that planning, keeping records and reviewing are good business practices that all should be employing. • External assistance may be needed for the biodiversity and environmental action planning sections of the Codes as the requisite skills and knowledge are not widespread within the industry. Why become EntWine Australia certified? •Makes good business sense Risk management – environmental/ occupational health and safety incidents, reputation, market share Direct savings achieved through reducing use of chemicals, fertilisers, water and energy •Formal recognition of environmental best practice using a straightforward and tested system What’s involved? • Freshcare Environmental (or other environmental management system) training and follow-up visit • Putting systems in place to meet the Freshcare Environmental (or other EMS) and EntWine requirements • Implementing and recording actions • Third party audit EntWine costs • One-off Freshcare Environmental Registration fee $55 • Freshcare Environmental fee payable at audit $130 every 3 years • Training costs (approx $400/company) • Audit costs ($450+) • EntWine Membership fee payable annually to WFA ¾ Growers - $100 ¾ Wine companies - $100 for WFA members or $400 for WFA non-members.
