REAL-WORLD EXPERIENCE
This major prepares graduates for rewarding
careers with a variety of employers such as:
The BA in American Studies focuses on
the interdisciplinary study of American
culture. Majors acquire many of the
same skills which are gained in a traditional
humanities or social science major, most
notably analytical abilities and strong
writing. Students gain the ability to make
connections between diverse fields and
subjects, a capacity for self-direction, and
the ability to apply their skills to a variety
of contemporary professional fields
including: government, economics, social
work, education, journalism, business,
psychology, law, digital and print media,
non-profit work, theater and the arts.
The American Studies major provides
an opportunity for motivated, independent
thinkers seeking preparation for careers in
a variety of fields to round out their studies
with internships in the following areas:
• Arts
• Business
• City planning
• Conservation
• Government
• Journalism
• Law
• Non-profit
• Public history
CURRICULUM
In the American Studies major, students
take three required courses, then have
the choice to customize their major with
24 credits of major electives in one of
five areas of concentration:
• New York: Urban and Regional Studies
• Civic Engagement and Public Values
• The Law and American Studies
• American Arts
• Individualized Studies

American Studies and
Communications dual
major Karlene King ’12
pursued a full-time position
as development assistant
and board liaison at the
Committee to Protect
Journalists (CPJ). CPJ monitors,
advocates and protects press freedom
around the world and on the internet. At
CPJ, I helped launch a new web page
for donations. I am also the point
person for processing all incoming
gifts, I manage our database, and
organize large and small scale meetings.
My role as the board liaison has
allowed me to build relationships
with our board members.
