Course Summary:
The purpose of this course is to serve as an introduction to the life, work, thought,
and writings of the Apostle Paul - one of the most influential of the early Christian
writers. Emphasis will be placed on Paul’s personal story, the literary structure and
rhetorical approach of his letters, and the specific issues which he addresses in his
writings. Attention will also be given to the social context of the communities to
which Paul was writing, how that context shapes his approach, and how Paul’s firstcentury directives are often applied to theological conversations and controversies
in our present day.
Course evaluations will include one five-page paper, in-class presentations (both
group and individual), short quizzes, a reflective journal, and class participation.
