Facilitated by Ms Isabel Fox Isabel is a proud former CSU journalism student, having graduated with distinction from a Bachelor of Arts (Communication - Journalism). She has worked as both a journalist and PR professional for more than ten years in Australia, the UK and throughout the Pacific. Isabel has been teaching in the Faculty of Arts since 2006 and was awarded the 2013 Vice Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Sessional Teaching. Mr Andrew Mashman Andrew Mashman has been facilitating, mentoring and motivating marketers to perform for more than 15 years. Through exposure to both big and small brands from commercial, professional service, NFP and government sectors, Andrew inspires people to take a fresh look at the world around them and develop smart strategies to achieve their goals. Andrew is a great listener and can contextualise marketing in your space to develop confidence, improved decision making and smarter outcomes. Andrew is an Adjunct Lecturer with Charles Sturt University, tree changer and father of 4. DAY 2 HIGH IMPACT BUSINESS WRITING An interactive session addressing your professional writing skills by helping you to clarify the main points of your written communication; understand the importance of editing and proofreading; improve your “ewriting”; deal with writer’s block; and understand your audience in adopting the right tone. Dr Suzie Gibson Lecturer in English Literature School of Humanities and Social Sciences Suzie has a PhD in Comparative Literature at the University of Queensland. Previously at the University of Sydney, she gained a First Class Honours Degree in English Literature. Suzie has extensive teaching experience in literature and writing, and has worked in a number of Australian tertiary institutions. She is currently the coordinator of Professional Writing, COM111. Before she came to CSU in 2013, Suzie was teaching academic, professional and creative writing at Griffith University and the University of Queensland. Suzie has also published extensively in the areas of literature, philosophy, ethics, and aesthetics and is a well-seasoned professional writer. Ms Ruth Bacchus Lecturer Faculty of Arts Ruth is a lecturer in English, and also teaches a subject called Politics of Identity, and sometimes Sociology and Justice Studies subjects. She has taught with Dr Suzie Gibson in Professional Writing, COM111 - a large, compulsory subject for all Communications students. BEST PRACTICES FOR A SUCCESSFUL MEETING Learn best practices to implement when supporting groups and committees. This session will look at: managing the meeting process and communication; importance of meeting agendas; recording accurate minutes and concise actions; and using social media to facilitate meeting organisation and collaboration. DEVELOPING EFFECTIVE CAREER GOALS A common sense approach to identifying the aspects of work you enjoy and are good at, and then setting yourself up with the knowledge, skills and experience to take you forward in your career. Dr Nick Drengenberg Academic Secretary & Manager Office of Academic Governance Nick has been the University's Academic Secretary for about a decade. His role includes management of the Office of Academic Governance which administers the work of the Academic Senate, the University's academic governing body, responsible to University Council for all academic policy. Nick’s role includes: researching and developing new policy, provision of authoritative strategic advice to staff, students and sections of the University, and management of many of the processes that flow from policy. He also manages the academic appeals processes in the University, and the operation of statutory compliance committees in animal and human ethics, radiation safety, bio safety and chemical safety. One of Nick’s current passions is the use of new technology to help make decisions and collaborate. Ms Clare Jonker Executive Officer Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Clare is the Executive Officer in the Office of the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) where she provides high level support to the DV-C Academic and has responsibility for the management, coordination, and direction of the Office’s administrative and financial functions. Before this, Clare worked in the Office of Academic Governance providing executive and secretariat support to a number of committees. At CSU Clare has also worked as a Student Support Officer in Student Services and Student Central. Clare has a Bachelor Degree in Agriculture and Resource Economics (Hons) and a Masters of Business Administration. Before joining CSU she worked for many years in the Agricultural Industry – as a Research/Executive Officer for the Victorian Farmers Federation and a Service Manager/Grain Marketer for AWB Ltd. Clare lives in Bathurst with her young family USE THE INTERNET TO GET STUFF DONE (Yes - the internet) Learn how to best manage your time at work using a variety of productivity techniques and Mr James Brann Manager, Outreach Team Office for Students James is the Manager of the CSU Outreach Team - a smallish team based on all of the CSU campuses. The Outreach Team is a group of people dedicated applications including Evernote, Dropbox and Google Calendar. to helping students to succeed in their studies. The team has all studied via DE ourselves and know the challenges associated with studying in this way. James is also studying a PhD part-time and has a considerable large amount of lawn to mow on a regular basis. Time management/productivity is a big deal for him and is always looking to get more out of his day. FAST FINANCE REPORTING Ms Carmen Frost Senior Manager, Management Services Division of Finance Learn the fundamentals of the new FAST reporting and gain more confidence in dealing with financial transactions and information. Carmen manages the Management Services Team within the Division of Finance, providing services such as finance liaison, budget, management reporting, and continuous improvement. She has over 22 years of active commitment to the University and its communities, and is currently a member of University Council. Mr Peter Sinclair Business Analyst, Management Services Division of Finance Peter completed a Bachelor of Business (Human Resource Management) in 1998 at CSU and worked for Kendell Airlines/Regional Express, ABC Learning Centres, NSW Dept of Housing and finally started at CSU in 2007 with the Division of Human Resources. He moved to his current position as Business Analyst in the Management Services Team with the Division of Finance in 2010. Peter assists the Manager of the Management Services Team, administers the Fortnightly Salary Commitment reports and is also currently looking after the FAST reporting tool. GETTING THE MOST OUT OF COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGIES Mr Sam Parker Systems Development Manager Division of Student Learning Technologies that can enhance communications. An introduction and some little known features of Microsoft Office Communicator, Yammer, Bridgit, Twitter and more. Sam is the custodian of many Learning and Teaching systems including DOMS, EASTS, the Subject Coordinators Database, Textbooks database and NORFOLK. He has a keen interest in advancing CSU's use of technology and has worked on designing and improving Learning and Teaching systems over the last 10 years. Sam is also a Subject Coordinator in eCommerce. PRESENTING WITH INFLUENCE Foundation Room 2 Ms Linda Ward Manager, Faculty Educational Design & Media Team Division of Student Learning Techniques to engage audiences and develop the skills to become a confident speaker. Be clear. Be memorable. Be yourself. Linda leads a multi campus team to assist teaching staff in the Faculty of Education in areas such as curriculum and subject design, assessment of learning and use of technology in learning & teaching. She has worked in the field of Educational design since joining CSU in 2006. Linda has a Bachelor of Business (Accounting) degree and a Master of Education (Information Communication Technology). THE PRACTICAL PROJECT MANAGER Learn the basics of Project Management and how they apply to real-life scenarios and workplace tasks. POLICY DEVELOPMENT & MANAGEMENT AT CSU The session will provide a broad overview of governance at the University and where policy development and management fits into this. In addition, the session will provide a demonstration of the new policy database, its functionalities and resources. COMMUNICATING WITH CONFIDENCE AND CLARITY Review the basics of good communication and learn how to apply these powerful principles on an everyday basis. This engaging session will work through practical strategies including body language; talking vs. listening and how to speak with more confidence and power. Ms Shelley McMenamin University Records Manager Division of Information Technology Shelley studied at Curtin University receiving a BA App Sci (Records Management) and has worked in the industry for nearly 20 years. Ms Julie Newham Manger, Planning Office of Planning and Audit Julie has 20 years experience in the IT industry and 9 years experience as a Project Manager. She has been working with CSU for the past 18 months as Manager, Planning in the Office of Planning and Audit. Ms Linda Breen Deputy University Secretary and Manager, Corporate Affairs Office of Corporate Affairs Linda has worked for the University for 7 years as a manager in the Office of Corporate Affairs and held the position of Deputy University Secretary for the past 4 years. Previously Linda worked as a Service Planner with NSW Health. Linda's particular interests lie in organisational and corporate governance. Her postgraduate qualification in Ethics and Legal Studies was completed at CSU and she is proud to be an alumna of the University. Linda also holds qualifications in Governance and Risk Management and is a member of the Chartered Secretaries Association (Governance Institute of Australia) and the Australian Association of University Secretaries Mr Daniel Aubin Lecturer in Theatre/Media School of Communication and Creative Industries Dan is a lecturer, director, performing artist and researcher in the School of Communication and Creative Industries. He currently teaches 'Presentation for Communicators'. Throughout his 20-year career Dan has worked in the arts, entertainment, business and education sectors. He has toured extensively through Europe, North America and Australasia working in theatre, film, stunts, festivals, special events and circus. His diverse industry experience ranges from designing corporate leadership programs to stunt doubling Mark Wahlberg. Dan has taught at Flinders University and Adelaide College of the Arts. In 2011 Dan joined the CSU Theatre/Media team with the aim of inspiring the next generation of creative thinkers and communicators. Dan is currently researching the creative process and is interested in clear and courageous communication. CAREERS IN REGIONAL AREAS AND HEALTHY WORK/LIFE BALANCE Ms Saranne Cooke, a CSU Council member, will provide an overview of her career to date, focusing on the various challenges and successes along the way. She will discuss the challenges around maintaining a successful career in a regional area, maintaining a healthy work/life balance while managing family and career commitments. She will focus on making a difference in the work place, taking ownership of your own destiny and having personal motivation to succeed. Ms Saranne Cooke CSU Council Member Saranne has extensive non-executive director and senior leadership experience in the energy, banking and investment, tertiary education, health and manufacturing sectors. She has extensive experience working in a variety of senior management roles within finance, strategy, marketing and information technology disciplines for multinationals, public companies, and government. She is currently a non-executive director on a number of boards and audit and risk committees, primarily in the health and education sectors. Saranne holds a Bachelor of Commerce, Master of Business (Marketing), and a Master of Commercial Law. She is an Associate Fellow of the Australian Marketing Institute, a Fellow Certified Practising Accountant, a Certified Practising Marketer, a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, and a member of the Golden Key International Honour Society
