Yarrow
Achillea millefolium
Yarrow has a cluster of tiny white flowers. The greenishgrey leaves look like feathers. It is known as ‘nature’s
band aid’ because when juice from the leaves is applied
to a cut, it stops the bleeding.
Rosa sp.
The Wild Rose has beautiful, sweet smelling, pink flowers.
The center of the flower is light yellow. Its leaves are green
and shiny and its stems have tiny thorns.
Pacific Ninebark
Physarpus capitatus
Pacific Ninebark has a round cluster of small white flowers
that have pink specks. The leaves are shiny and green. This
plant got its name because it was believed you had to peel
nine layers of bark to get to the wood underneath!
Starflower
Trientalis latifolia
Starflower has small pink-white flowers with yellow
centers. The flowers look like tiny stars, which is where it
gets its name. The leaves resemble fingers on a hand and
are light green.
Trillium
Trillium ovatum
This woodland plant has a beautiful, large white flower that
turns pinkish as it gets older. Its leaves are oval shaped and
dark green. This three-petaled wildflower is one of the first
to bloom in the early spring.
Alder
Alnus sp.
Alders are a deciduous tree that grows
along streams and rivers with dull green leaves and grey
bark. It produces flowers called catkins that are brownish-red
and hang down from the branches like tassels.
Hawthorn
Crataegus douglasii
Hawthorns have pretty white flowers and dark green leaves.
It has berries with a deep red color that turn blackish-purple
in the fall. The wood from this shrub is very strong and has
many uses for Native Americans.
Oceanspray
Holodiscus discolor
Oceanspray is a shrub with creamcolored flowers and dark green,
fuzzy leaves. Its wood is used by
Native Americans to make spears
and digging sticks.
Orange Honeysuckle
Lonicera ciliosa
Orange Honeysuckle flowers are bright orange and the
leaves are green. Butterflies and hummingbirds love the
flowers because they contain lots of sweet nectar.
MINER’S LETTUCE
Claytonia perfoliata
This small, white flower blooms out of the center of a light
green leaf. Its leaves are edible and rich in vitamin C.

Aquilegia formosa
The beautiful flower of the
Western Columbine has
nodding red petals with a
yellow center. The leaves
are light green.
OREGON GRAPE
Berberis aquifolium
Oregon Grape’s leaves
are shiny and green and
the flowers are yellow.
The berries are purple and
look like tiny grapes. The
berries contain vitamin C
and are very tart.
Amelanchier alnifolia
The leaves of the Serviceberry are dull green. The petals are
white with yellow centers and the berries are blue-purple.
Lupinus sp.
The Lupine’s leaves
are green and the
flowers are blue.
The fruit looks like
green pea pods, but
are not edible.
Epilobium angustifolium
The flowers of Fireweed are bright pink and the
leaves are green. This plant gets its name because it is
one of the first plants to grow after a wildfire.
Western Choke Cherry
Prunus virginiana
Western Choke Cherry is a shrub with long
white flowers and bright green leaves. In the
summer it produces small cherries that turn
almost black when ripe. The berries are
edible and make tasty jelly.
Eriophyllum lanatun
The flowers are bright yellow on this beautiful
plant. Its hairy leaves have a silvery-grey color.
Philadelphus lewissii
Mockorange has creamy-white flowers with bright yellow
centers. The leaves feel like leather and are light green.
During the early summer this plant’s flowers fill the forest
with a sweet fragrance.
Acer macrophyllum
Bigleaf Maple trees have huge leaves that can be up to
14 inches across! Their flowers are greenish-yellow that
grow in short clusters. The seeds of this plant grow in
pairs called “helicopter seeds” because of the whirling
pattern they make as they fall. The leaves turn a
brilliant yellow-red in the fall.
Asarum caudatum
This plant has bright green leaves and the flower is dark
purple. The leaves have a citrus scent when rubbed and
can be used medicianally like conventional ginger.
