Competition, Classes and Workshops Information Form
Competition Regulations and Information
Competitors are eligible to enter this competition if they comply with all of the following regulations:
— Must be 25 years of age or younger on the 20th of August 2016
— Must be a fulltime student of any nationality at a musical tertiary institution or normal high school in
New Zealand, Australia, or Singapore (a letter of verification will be required with your application); OR, be
a cellist travelling on a New Zealand, Australian or Singaporean passport
— Applications including DVD recordings and initial payments (see below) must be submitted by 30 April
2016
— Semi-finalists will be notified by 30 May, 2016 with an acceptance required by the 20th of June 2016.
— There will be a reserve list of alternative competitors, and any additional candidates from this list will
be notified by the 1st of July 2016 of their acceptance into round 2
— Competitors who are accepted into the second and third rounds will be billeted with friends of the
University of Waikato Conservatorium of Music throughout their stay in Hamilton
— An accompanist will be provided for the competition if required by the competitors
Competition Prizes and Jury
There will be three cash prizes awarded as well as a jury prize. The first place winner will receive a prize of
NZ$7,000; the second place winner will receive a prize of NZ$2,000; and, the third place winner will receive
a prize of NZ$1,000.
The competition jury for the final round will consist of the invited international cellists, Wolfgang Schmidt,
Richard Aaron, Li-Wei Qin, and Philippe Muller. The semi-final round will be judged by a panel of esteemed
New Zealand musicians.
Competition Repertoire
Round 1 (to be submitted by DVD recording)
— 1. Allemande and Courante with all repeats from one of the following suites by J.S. Bach for solo cello:
Suite III in C major (BWV 1009), Suite IV in E flat major (BWV 1010), Suite V in C minor (BWV 1011), and
Suite VI in D major (BWV 1012)
— 2. 1st movement from any concerto of the standard repertoire from Haydn to the present day, OR a
concert piece in one movement (10-15 minutes in length), OR a theme and variations (10-15 minutes in
length).
— 3. A work of the competitor’s choice that demonstrates his or her musical flair and virtuosity.

Round 2 (Semi-finals, Dr John Gallagher Concert Chamber, 20 August 2016)
Up to 12 competitors from round 1 will be selected for the semi-finals to perform works from the following
repertoire:
— 1. Prelude, Sarabande and Gigue with all repeats from one of the following suites by J.S. Bach for solo
cello: Suite III in C major (BWV 1009), Suite IV in E flat major (BWV 1010), Suite V in C minor (BWV 1011),
and Suite VI in D major (BWV 1012)
— 2. A commissioned solo cello work written for the competition by Michael Williams, which will be made
available to those contestants chosen for the semi-final round
— 3. Schubert’s Arpeggione Sonata (D. 821), complete (without 1st movement repeat); OR Beethoven’s
Cello Sonata no. 4 in C major, Op. 102, no. 1, complete
— 4. Any two contrasting movements (should not be a first and last movement) from one of the following
sonatas: Brahms’ Cello Sonata no. 1 in E minor, Op. 38; Brahms’ Cello Sonata no. 2 in F major, Op. 99;
Brahms’ Cello Sonata in D major, Op. 78 (transcribed from Violin Sonata no. 1); Chopin’s Cello Sonata in G
minor, Op. 65; Franck’s Cello Sonata in A major (arr. Delsart); Shostakovich’s Cello Sonata in D minor, Op.
40; Prokofiev’s Cello Sonata in C major, Op. 119; Martinu’s Cello Sonata no. 2, H. 286
— 5. A work of the competitor’s own choice that demonstrates his or her musical flair and virtuosity
(maximum 10 minutes in length)
Round 3 (F inals , Dr John Gallagher Concert Chamber, 22 August 2016)
Up to 4 competitiors from round 2 (semi-finals) will be selected for the finals. Competitors’ repertoire will
be chosen from those works submitted for round 2 and will result in a performance of 30-40 minutes in
length.
Masterclasses Information
Masterclasses will be taken by the following international artists: Li-Wei Qin (Singapore), Wolfgang Schmidt
(Berlin), Philippe Muller (Paris and New York), and Richard Aaron (Juilliard and University of Michigan).
There will be approximately 12 master classes during the week of the festival and depending on the demand and number of interested students, applicants may be able to select which cellists they work with. If
you choose 4 classes then you will get one class from each of the artists. Participants may be any age, but
are expected to be able to play at a suitably high level (Grade 8 or university performance course).
Workshops Information
Richard Aaron will hold two workshops focusing on i) improving intonation, and ii) orchestral excerpts.
Professor Aaron will choose 3-4 standard excerpts for orchestral auditions for students to prepare for the
second workshop. Participants may be any age, but are expected to be able to play at a suitably high level
(Grade 8 or university performance course).

Thursday 18 August - Rehearsal in Dr John Gallagher Concert Chamber with accompanist (45 minutes per
student)
Friday 19 August - Rehearsal with accompanist (times and venue to be advised)
Saturday 20 August - Competition Semi-finals, 10am - 6pm, Dr John Gallagher Concert Chamber
Monday 22 August - Competiton Finals, 7.30pm, Dr John Gallagher Concert Chamber
Monday 22 August-Friday 26 August - Masterclasses daily (am and pm)
Saturday 27 August - Workshops with Richard Aaron (am and pm)
Applicants for the masterclasses may provide a preference for the cellist/s with whom they will work, and
the days on which their classes will take place. The festival organisers will aim to satisfy these preferences,
but may not be able to guarantee specific times for everyone.
Submission of Materials
All applications for the competition must be accompanied by a DVD recording of the repertoire listed
above. All applications for the masterclasses and/or workshops must be accompanied by a DVD recording
of 10-15 minutes in length that demonstrates the quality of your playing.

Fees
All applications for the competition must be accompanied by a NZ$50 non-refundable deposit.
Applications without a payment will not be considered. Upon acceptance for the competition, students will
have 21 days to confirm their attendance. This is done through a payment of NZ$200 that covers the semifinal and final rounds of the competition, and participation in four masterclasses and two workshops.
Fees for attending only the masterclasses and workshops are:
- NZ$100 per 40-minute masterclass, or NZ$300 for four masterclasses
- NZ$50 per workshop
All fees are in New Zealand dollars and are GST inclusive.

Waikato-based students may pay at the Cashier in the University of Waikato Student Centre. All other
