Design Assistance
The City of Fort Collins offers design
assistance, paying up to $2,000, to help
residents develop compatible designs for
homes in our local historic neighborhoods.
Our goal is to minimize the impacts of
additions, alterations, and new construction,
on neighboring properties and on the
overall historic character of Fort Collins.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR ASSISTANCE?
There are three main criteria for eligibility:
- you must own the property,
- the proposed work is on the exterior of your
property, and
- the property must be located in certain areas or
near certain historic properties in Fort Collins.
WHAT AREAS ARE ELIGIBLE?
There are three locations eligible for assistance.
The largest is the Eastside and Westside
Neighborhoods (generally north of Prospect Road,
between Taft Hill Road and Lemay Avenue).
Properties in and/or adjacent to the Old Town
Commercial District are also eligible. And, properties
that are designated historic landmarks, or adjacent
to a designated landmark (no matter where in Fort
Collins) can apply for assistance.
HOW DOES DESIGN ASSISTANCE WORK?
The maximum amount you can receive is $2,000
per year. Depending on the scope of the project,
the entire fee may be more. Any costs above the
$2,000 maximum, or any costs incurred outside of
the scope of the program, will be the sole
responsibility of the property owner. Assistance is
available on a first come, first served basis and can
be applied towards more than one aspect of the
same project using separate consultants. Owners
of multiple buildings may apply for assistance for
up to five separate properties per year, unless
otherwise approved by the Landmark Preservation
Commission.
HOW DO I APPLY?
Start off by meeting with City’s historic preservation
staff for an initial discussion. Then, if you wish to
