RMS Streamline Analysis Data Sheet 2014

Streamline Analysis
Streamline simulations can be used for dynamic analysis of the
reservoir, for validation and ranking of reservoir modelling scenarios,
and for quality control of property upscaling. Due to the fast
algorithms, streamline simulations will work for large models where
conventional simulation methods struggle to deal with the large
number of grid cells. With RMSStream, dynamic simulations can be
performed with both geo model and flow model.
IN SUMMARY
• Simple and fast streamline analysis which can be
integrated in all modeling workflows.
• Designed to be easy accessible and usable for both
geologists and reservoir engineers.
• Complementary to conventional reservoir simulation, but
can also be used for large geological models.
• Analysis can be based on streamline visualisation, 3D
report parameters, drainage functions , and break through
times.
• Can be used to visualise main flow patterns in the model,
to rank geo models, to design optimal well locations, or to
validate upscaling results.
• In addition to the single-phase option, contains a
Buckley-Leverett model for two-phase flow.
Dynamic Analysis for Reservoir Modelling
RMSStream is a streamline analysis tool which provides fast and
early assessment of reservoir flow characteristics at various scales
of the reservoir model, even on multi-million cell geological
models.
With an easy to use user interface RMSStream can be used by
geoscientists and reservoir engineers to quickly validate geological
models and/or upscaled simulation models. Integration with RMSTM
and its workflow tools also allows for easy screening and ranking of
multiple realisations and/or scenarios.
Truy Integrated
RMSStream is completely integrated into Roxar’s reservoir modelling
solution, RMS. This allows for streamline analysis to be quickly and
easily included within the reservoir characterisation and modelling
workflow.
Streamline Analysis
There are a range of different ways in which streamlines can be used
to improve the quality and understanding of the reservoir model:
Ranking Geological Scenarios
Well Location and Optimisation
Streamline simulations can provide a fast and early assessment
of the well locations. The sensitivity analysis can be performed
by ranking streamline simulations with respect to sand connectivity,
drainage volume, breakthrough times and pressure in the wells.
Uncertainties within the reservoir may require that multiple
geological scenarios are modeled in order to quantify their impact on
field development planning. With the ability to handle large numbers
of cells, streamlines are an ideal tool for the dynamic ranking of these
multiple scenarios.

Validation of Upscaling Results
Conventional flow simulation grids are often much coarser than
the fine scale geological grids. Upscaling of reservoir properties
is therefore often employed to reduce the numbers of cells
whilst attempting to capture the effects of fine scale heterogeneity.
RMSStream provides a quick way of analysing the impact of upscaling
on the fine scale reservoir heterogeneity and helping ensure the
accuracy of the results. This is done by comparing the streamline
results for both the original geological and upscaled simulation
models.
Gridding Design
Roxar 2014
Streamlines can be used to help optimize simulation grid design,
ensuring that the level of coarsening and grid orientation capture the
fine scale heterogeneity. Multiple grids can be built, and then
compared using streamlines, a process which can also be automated
using the workflow manager in RMS.
