About the Cisco UCS Manager Add-in
Cisco UCS Manager Add-in for SCVMM provides an extension to the Virtual Machine Manager user interface.
The extended interface enables you to manage the UCS servers (blade servers and rack-mount servers). You
can perform the following tasks using the extension:
• Viewing and acknowledging pending activities
• Mapping of the hypervisor host with the blades or rack servers on which it is installed
• Adding or removing a UCS domain
• Viewing the server details
• Assigning proxy settings to the domain.
• Viewing the firmware details of a server
• Viewing the fault information
• Viewing service profiles and service profile templates details
• Viewing the registered UCS domains details
• Launching the host (server) KVM console
• Managing the desired power state of the servers
• Switching on and off of the locator LEDs
• Associating service profile to a server
• Associating service profile to a server pool

System Requirements

System Requirements
Before installing Cisco UCS Manager Add-in, ensure the system meets or exceeds the following minimum
software requirements:
• Windows PowerShell 2.0
• NET Framework 4.0 or above
• System Center 2016 Virtual Machine Manager, System Center 2012 SP1 Virtual Machine Manager, or
System Center 2012 R2 Virtual Machine Manager
Supported Operating Systems
The Cisco UCS Manager Add-in supports the following 64-bit version of the Windows operating systems:
• Windows Server 2016
• Windows Server 2012 R2
• Windows Server 2012
• Windows Server 2008 R2
Note
You can find installation and upgrade information for System Center Virtual Machine Manager on the
Microsoft website.

Cisco UCS Manager Add-in does not support firmware upgrade functionality for UCS Manager running

Perform the following steps to install the Cisco UCS virtual machine manager add-in:

Virtual machine manger must be installed and available.

Open https://software.cisco.com/download/type.html?mdfid=286282669&flowid=72562.
Click Unified Computing System (UCS) Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager to view
the list of available versions for download.
Download and save the zipped folder.
Note
The add-in is made available as a zipped file that has to be imported into the virtual machine manager
to install it.
Open an instance of the Virtual Machine Manager console.
In the Navigation pane, click Settings.
In the toolbar, click Import Console Add-in.
The Import Console Add-in wizard appears.
Click Browse and navigate to the location where the zipped file is saved.
Select the zip file and click Open.
Click Next.
Click Finish.
The add-in is installed and a new icon called Cisco UCS Manager appears in the toolbar.

Adding and Removing UCS Groups
This chapter includes the following sections:

Adding UCS Groups
You can create UCS groups to group together a set of domains with common properties. For example, you
can create groups based on locations and add UCS domains in various locations to their respective groups.
Similarly, you can create groups based on any criteria of your choice and add the relevant domains matching
the criteria. This helps in organizing domains under logical groups. Perform the following steps to add a group
under the UCS domain:

On the toolbar, click Cisco UCS Manager.
Right-click on UCS Domains.
Click Add Group.
The Add Group dialog box appears.
Step 4

Enter the group name in the Group Name field.
Click OK.
The group with the chosen name appears under the UCS Domains node.
Note
• You can add sub-groups within a group. To add a sub-group, right-click on the group within
which you want to add a sub-group and follow steps 3 through 5 in the preceding procedure.
You can add up to four levels of sub-groups within a group.
• You can rename a group by right-clicking on the group and choosing Rename UCS Group.
• You can add UCS domains within the groups.

Removing UCS Groups
Perform the following steps to remove a UCS group:

On the toolbar, click Cisco UCS Manager.
In the UCS Domains node, right-click on the UCS group that you want to delete.
Click Remove UCS Group.
If the group does not have sub-groups or any UCS domains the group is deleted. Otherwise an appropriate
warning message appears indicating that deletion of the group will also delete the sub-groups and unregister
any UCS domains within it.
Step 4
Click OK.
The UCS domains within the groups chosen for deletion are disconnected are unregistered. And the chosen
UCS group and the sub-groups within it are deleted.

Adding UCS Domain
You can register domains using any access privileges. Depending on the privileges available to the user with
which UCS domain is registered, some or all actions may be disabled.
Perform the following steps to register a UCS domain:

On the toolbar, click Cisco UCS Manager.
Right-click on UCS Domains.
Click Add UCS Domain.
The Add UCS Domain dialog box appears.

Enter the following details in the dialog box:

want to register.

Username of the UCS domain.
Password
Password of the UCS domain.

Port number of the UCS domain server.

If required, you can edit the UCS domain details at a later
time.
Click Proxy Settings.
Proxy Settings dialog box appears.
In the Proxy Settings dialog box, click Use Custom Proxy Settings radio button and enter the following
details:

If required, you can edit the proxy settings at a later
time.

The registered UCS domain appears under the UCS domains node. Upon adding a UCS domain, the hypervisor
hosts running on the newly added UCS domain appear under the Hypervisor Hosts node.

You also can add UCS domains within groups. If you want to add a UCS domain within a group,
right-click on the group and follow steps 3 through step 7 in the preceding procedure.
Removing a UCS Domain
Perform the following steps to remove a UCS domain:

In the UCS Domains node, right-click the UCS domain that you want to delete.
Click Remove UCS Domain.
Click Yes in the delete confirmation dialog box.
The selected UCS domain is disconnected and unregistered.

Viewing the Server Details From the Hypervisor Host View
Using the add-in you can view the details such as properties, faults information, and firmware details of the
servers (blades or rack-mount servers) on which the host is running. The Hypervisor hosts can be arranged
in groups. The following procedure provides steps to view server details:

In the Hypervisors node, select the hypervisor host which is associated with the server.
On the right pane of the window, you can view the following information of the server on which the host is
running:

in this section to view the fault details.

Displays the properties of the server such as, server
ID, UUID, serial number, associated service profiles
and so on. If a service profile is associated with the
server, a link to the location of the service profile is
provided. Clicking on the link displays the properties
of the associated service profile.
Status
Indicates the status of the tasks running on the host.
Actions area
Associate Service Profile
Enables you to associate a service profile to the server.
Disassociate Service Profile
Enables you to disassociate a service profile from the
server.
Set Desired Power State
Provides options to set the power state of a service
profile.
KVM Console
Enables you to launch the KVM console.
Turn on Locator LED
Enables you to either turn on or turn off the locator
LED depending on the current state.
Firmware tab
Provides the firmware details such as BIOS, CIMC,
adaptors and storage device part IDs, and the firmware
versions. If there are any changes to the firmware
details on the server, those changes will reflect here.
Faults tab
Displays the faults' details specific to the server, such
as properties, severity, fault codes and IDs,
description, affected objects, and so on. Provides
options to filter the faults based on severity, and
option under the Actions area to acknowledge the
fault on UCS.

On the toolbar, click Cisco UCS Manager.
Click UCS Domains.
The list of registered UCS domains and consolidated UCS information for each domain, such as the name
and version, number of associated hosts, VMs and servers appear on the right pane of the window.
(Optional) You can view the details in the grid view or the card view by clicking View option on the right-top
corner and choosing the appropriate option.
Viewing the UCS Blade Server Details
Using the add-in you can view the server details, such as properties, faults information, and firmware details.
The following procedure provides steps to view server details:

Under the UCS Domains node, expand the UCS domain.
Expand Equipment > Chassis.
A list of chassis appears.

Choose a chassis.
The list of blade servers on the chassis appears under the chassis on the left pane. You can also view the list
of blade servers on the right pane on the window.

Select the blade for which you want to view the details.
The properties of the blade appear on the right pane of the window. You can view the following server
information:

Using the add-in you can view the service profile details, such as properties, and faults information. The
following procedure provides steps to view the service profile details:

Choose Service Profiles.

of the server.

The service profile details appear on the right pane of the window. You can view the following service profile

Using the add-in you can view the service profile template details, such as properties, and faults information.

Using the add-in you can view the host firmware packages properties. The following procedure provides steps
to view the host firmware packages details:

Performing Actions From the Hypervisor Host View
You can perform a set of actions on the server using the hypervisor view. Following are the actions that you
can perform:
Disassociating a Service Profile
The following procedure describes how to disassociate a service profile from a server:

On the toolbar, click Cisco UCS Manager.
In the Hypervisor node, select the server for which you want to disassociate a service profile.
The hypervisor host details appear on the right pane of the window.

In the Actions area, click Disassociate Service Profile.
Click Yes in the confirmation dialog box.

Service profile is disassociated from the server.
Setting the Power State
The following procedure describes how to set the power state of a server:

On the toolbar, click Cisco UCS Manager.
In the Hypervisor node, select the server for which you want to set the power state.
The hypervisor host details appear on the right pane of the window.

In the Actions area, click Set Desired Power State.
In the Set Power State dialog box, select Up or Down.
Click OK.
Depending on your choice the power state of the server is set.
Launching the KVM Console
The following procedure describes how to launch a KVM Console of a server:

On the toolbar, click Cisco UCS Manager.
In the Hypervisor node, select the server for which you want to launch a KVM console.
The hypervisor host details appear on the right pane of the window.
Step 3
In the Actions area, click Launch KVM Console.
This launches the KVM console.
Turning on the LED Locator
The following procedure describes how to turn on an LED locator of a server:

On the toolbar, click Cisco UCS Manager.
In the Hypervisor node, select the server for which you want to change the locator LED state.

The hypervisor host details appear on the right pane of the window.
Step 3
In the Actions area, click Turn on Locator LED.
Successfully issued the turn on locator LED command message appears. There may be a delay in SCVMM
receiving the notification of the LED's new state.
Step 4
Click OK.
The LED state is changed.
Note
If the locator LED state is ON, and if you want to turn it off, you can follow the same steps in the
preceding procedure to turn it off.
Performing Actions From the UCS Server View
You can perform a set of actions on the UCS blade and rack server using the add-in. Following are the actions
that you can perform:
Associating a Service Profile
The following procedure describes how to associate a service profile to a server:

On the toolbar, click Cisco UCS Manager.
In the UCS Domains node, expand the UCS domain.
Expand Equipment > Rack-Mounts.
For blade servers:
• Expand Equipment > Chassis.
The list of chassis appears under Chassis.
• Choose a chassis.
The list of blade servers on the chassis appears under the chassis on the left pane. You can also view the
list of blade servers on the right pane on the window.
• Choose the blade for which you want to associate a service profile.
The blade server details appear on the right pane of the window.
Step 4
Select the rack server for which you want to associate a service profile.
The server details appear on the right pane of the window.
Step 5

Upgrading Host Firmware
Each server is indirectly associated with host firmware package through a service profile. Modifying Blade
package and Rack package version upgrades the firmware on associated service profiles. UCS firmware
remains unchanged.
Note
Upgrading the firmware of the default host firmware package will update the firmware on servers that are
not associated with service profiles.

Pending Activities
The following procedure provides steps to upgrade the firmware on servers by modifying the firmware versions
of the associated host firmware packages.

Expand Orgs, and then root.
Expand Host Firmware Packages and select the host firmware package which is associated with the service

• You can view the currently associated host firmware package by clicking on the Change Host
Firmware Package action. This displays the existing packages.
• If you want to upgrade the firmware on server that does not have an associated service profile,
select the default host firmware package. Choosing this option will upgrade the firmware on
all the servers that are not associated with service profiles.
You can view the host firmware package information on the right pane of the window.
Click Modify Package Versions.
Modify Package Versions dialog box appears.
Step 6 For the B-Series and C-Series servers, select the firmware versions to which you want to upgrade from the
respective Blade Package and Rack Package drop down lists.
In the Host Firmware Package Dependencies area, lists all the associated service profiles.
Step 7 Click Next.
Summary of the impacted endpoints appear.
Step 8 (Optional) Use the available filter option to view specific impacts.
Step 9 Click Next.
Impacted virtual machines and their status appear.
Step 10 If a Virtual Machine is running on any impacted server, the process will stop with a warning. To avoid this
warning and continue with the update, check the Upgrade even with running VMs.
Step 11 Click Update.

Using the Cisco UCS Manager Add-in Settings Option
The settings option is available as the last top level node in the context tree. The following procedure includes
steps to set the parameters:

On the toolbar, click Cisco UCS Manager.
In the navigation pane, click Add-in Settings.
The Settings dialog box appears.

In the Refresh Timer Interval (>=1) field, enter the refresh time interval you want to set.
The time interval range is 1 to 1440 minutes. The default is 5 minutes. This time interval controls how often
the information on the selected view in the add-in is refreshed.

Select an option for which you want to save the log files from the Logging Mode drop-down list.
The default value is INFO.
Step 5
In the Log File Size (1-100) field, enter a number to set the size of the error log.
The default value is 10 MB. This is the size of the log file. If the log exceeds the set file size, a new file is
created with a suffix that starts with one and increments by one for the subsequent files.

Log File Path indicates the path where the log files are saved.
The log file parameters are set and the log will be saved at a location indicated in the Log File Path.

If you encounter any issues while installing the add-in indicating missing dll files, you can resolve these issues
by ensuring you have read and write permissions for the ..\Program Files\Microsoft System
Center 2012\Virtual Machine Manager\bin\AddInPipeline folder (folder that runs the
VMM Console) on your machine.
